COLUMBUS, Ohio – Earlier this month, a group of members of the Ohio State Athletics Department traveled to Orlando, Fla., for a professional development opportunity at the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and Affiliates Convention held June 5-12 at the World Center Marriott Resort. After spending the week in Orlando, the members of the department came back to Columbus and held their own NACDA Forum to pass along knowledge gained from the convention, Tuesday morning at the Fawcett Center.
“Our goal was to provide a professional development opportunity to those who were unable to make the NACDA Convention,” Ohio State executive associate athletics director for administration Martin Jarmond said. “I want to thank Bob Vecchione and his team for supporting this first-time initiative. From the name tags to the roundtable breakouts, it truly had that NACDA feel with professional and personal growth for our team.”
“We want to thank Ohio State for having a NACDA day on their campus yesterday,” stated Vecchione, executive director of NACDA. “We hope it was enlightening for those individuals that were unable to attend Convention this year and look forward to seeing the Buckeye staff in Orlando in 2015.”
From aspiring students and Bucks Go Pro interns to full-time staff members, more than 60 department members joined the forum to further their professional development.
After an introduction from Jarmond, the group was greeted with a welcome from Vecchione. Two breakout sessions followed over the next hour where forum visitors were able to join discussions from any of six areas: development, event management and facilities, compliance, administration, communications and marketing, fan experience and ticket sales.
After the first two breakout sessions, a group panel was held amongst senior administrators to discuss managing your own personal brand and being successful. Executive associate athletics director Miechelle Willis, associate athletics directors Mike Penner and Shaun Richard, assistant athletics director Maura Murphy and associate compliance director Danie Daluisio conducted the back-and-forth discussion about what leaders look for in prospective employees along with other keys to enhancing your personal brand.
Two more breakout sessions followed before a panel discussion on lessons learned and advice concluded the four-hour forum.
“We had a great turnout at our first NACDA forum,” Jarmond said. “Students, student-athletes and staff were very engaged in discussions throughout the morning and hopefully learned more about each area of our department. Our presenters did a great job discussing what they do and topics they covered at NACDA and we are definitely looking to continue this program in the future.”
