Athletes of the Week

  • T.K. Kelly, men’s golf
    • Kelly, a senior from Wheaton, Ill., won the NCAA Kohler Regional Wednesday and advanced to the 2016 NCAA Championships May 27-29 in Eugene, Ore. Kelly defeated 74 other golfers to take home the top spot.
  • Rio Watanabe, women’s golf
    • Watanabe, a redshirt sophomore from Kamagaya City, Japan, is tied for 15th place out of 132 players at the 2016 NCAA Championships, earning an individual slot in the fourth and final round of stroke play. The redshirt sophomore ranks fourth among players on non-advancing teams through 54 holes, keeping herself in contention for individual hardware.

Athletics

  • Athletic Director Gene Smith was named 2016 Sports Business Journal Athletics Director of the Year.
  • Ohio State stood second in the latest update of the 2016 Directors' Cup standings (April 20) and recently celebrated the achievements of a record 561 scholar-athletes (3.0 Grade-Point Average or better) at a ceremony held on campus.

No. 5 Men’s Tennis (30-2, 11-0 B1G)

  • After defeating Texas 4-3 for its 17th-consecutive victory, Ohio State advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals before falling to Cal 4-3.
  • Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen helped secure the doubles point against the Longhorns, while Chris Diaz, Martin Joyce and Pollanen won their singles matches to help the cause.

No. 5 Women’s Tennis (28-2, 11-0 B1G)

  • Ohio State defeated No. 17 Georgia Tech to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time in team history behind the performances of Francesca Di Lorenzo, Sandy Neihaus and Miho Kowase, who all won in both singles and doubles.

Baseball (38-17-1, 15-9 B1G)

  • After defeating Eastern Michigan and Minnesota twice, Ohio State has won eight of its last nine contests.
  • Taking two out of three from the No. 24-ranked and conference-champion Golden Gophers helped propel OSU into the No. 4 seed in this week’s Big Ten Tournament.
  • Stars of the weekend included: Ronnie Dawson, who hit two home runs in the Buckeyes’ come from behind 6-5 win on Sunday; Troy Kuhn, whose two-out RBI single in the ninth inning on Friday helped lead his team to a 3-2 win; and Troy Montgomery, who led the team with six hits over the weekend, including three on Friday.

No. 25 Women’s Golf

  • Led by Watanabe, Ohio State finished 22nd as a team at the NCAA championships with a score of +28.

Softball (34-20-1, 13-9-1 B1G)

  • Ohio State competed in its eighth NCAA Tournament in program history and first since 2010, earning a 6-1 win over Marist during its three-game appearance.
  • In the win, Alex Bayne, Emily Clark and Taylor White all smacked home runs while Shelby Hursh tossed a complete game. Bayne tied the single-season home run record at Ohio State with her 19th round tripper.
  • Bayne, Hursh, Clark and Cammi Prantl were all named to the NFCA All-Midwest Regional team, the most Ohio State selections since 2010.
