Ohio State Athletics Hosts Buckeye Futures Fair

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Dressed to impress with resumes in hand, Ohio State student-athletes took part in the inaugural Buckeye Futures Fair Thursday evening in the Huntington Club at Ohio Stadium. The event, which is part of an on-going effort by the Ohio State Department of Athletics to assist student-athletes in career preparation, featured representatives from approximately 60 companies and organizations.

LaToya Farris, assistant director of student-athlete career management, orchestrated the Buckeye Futures Fair as an exclusive tool for Ohio State student-athletes to secure internships and post-graduate employment.

"With student-athletes and their dedication to their sport and academics, they often don't have the time to make it to some of the other career events happening on campus," Farris said. "To have something specifically designated for them, without the same competition as the other career fairs, makes everything a little easier."

At the event, student-athletes were provided the opportunity to discuss steps necessary to gain employment within the companies and organizations of interest to them. A variety of career paths were showcased, including representatives from graduate degree programs.

"There are so many people who understand the value of the skills they, as student-athletes, possess. However, sometimes the student-athletes don't know they have those skills or understand their value to an employer," Farris said.

"I want to get to the point where our student-athletes are excited about the Buckeye Futures Fair and look forward to it," Farris continued. "We encourage younger students to view this as a great networking opportunity. It allows them to get in front of people and start telling their stories.

In her recently established role, Farris will continue implementing programs and strategies to assist student-athletes in career opportunities. The Buckeye Futures Fair is slated to be an annual event.
