Athletes of the Week

Francesca Di Lorenzo, women's tennis

  • Di Lorenzo beat the No. 2 ranked player in the nation, Astra Sharma, to help Ohio State knock off No. 9 Vanderbilt. Di Lorenzo won in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).

Johnny Pearson, men's lacrosse

  • Pearson netted four goals in the first game of 2017 for the Buckeyes. It was the fourth time in his career that he scored four goals.

No. 1 Men's Volleyball (11-0, 1-0 MIVA)

  • Ohio State snapped a 47-year-old school record by defeating No. 12 Ball State on Thursday night registering its 33rd straight win overall. On Saturday, the Buckeyes extended their streak to 34 games with a three-set victory over Fort Wayne.
  • Against Ball State, Ohio State attacked with a .429 percentage. Nicolas Szersen and Miles Johnson combined for 32 of the 47 OSU kills, each attacking above the .500 line.
  • Same story, different night. Against Fort Wayne Szerzen and Johnson once again paced the offense combining for 25 total kills and they both attacked .575-plus.

No. 3 Men's Tennis (7-0)

  • Ohio State welcomed USF into the OSU Varsity Tennis Center on Friday evening and sent the Bulls away with a 6-1 defeat. The Buckeyes improved to 7-0 on the season.
  • Ohio State won the doubles point thanks to wins by the doubles units of Martin Joyce and Hugo Di Feo, and Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen.
  • The Buckeyes won five of six singles matches. Torpegaard and Joyce won their matches in straight sets. JJ Wolf and Kyle Seelig, both of whom dropped their first sets, rallied back in both of their matches to win in three sets.

No. 4 Men's Gymnastics

  • OSU scored a season-high 422.200 points on their way to a commanding win over Michigan (404.950) on Saturday.
  • Jake Dastrup led the way for the Scarlet and Gray capturing two event titles at the meet. He won the pommel horse with a score of 14.900 matching his prior career best. He then took home the title on the parallel bars with a readout of 14.700.
  • Jake Martin won the all-around with a season-high score of 85.250, which ranks No. 5 in the NCAA.

No. 7 Women's Tennis (5-0)

  • Ohio State beat No. 9 Vanderbilt in a matchup of top 10 teams by a score of 5-2.
  • Francesca Di Lorenzo won on court one in straight sets in a matchup of the top two ranked single players in the nation.
  • Seniors Gabriella De Santis, Sandy Niehaus, Miho Kowase and Angeles Paz also all notched singles wins for the Scarlet and Gray, with Kowase clinching the win with a three-set victory and Niehaus also prevailing in three.

No. 11 Men's Hockey (13-7-6)

  • Forwards Mason Jobst and Nick Schilkey combined for four goals and seven points, leading the Buckeyes to a 6-5 comeback win over Michigan Saturday in Yost Ice Arena.
  • OSU trailed 5-4 entering the third period but Schilkey set Jobst up for a power play goal to tie the game at 8:33 and Jobst found Schilkey for the gamewinner with just 30 seconds left in regulation.

No. 14 Women's Basketball (21-5, 11-1 Big Ten)

  • The Buckeyes beat Penn State (87-72) and Wisconsin (96-68) to extend their winning streak to seven games.
  • Against Penn State, Sierra Calhoun poured in 17 points including five trifectas. Stephanie Mavunga collected another double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.
  • Kelsey Mitchell scored 32 points on 11-of-13 shooting in only 25 minutes of action to help Ohio State cruise to a victory at Wisconsin. Mavunga recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 17 Men's Lacrosse (1-0)

  • Senior Johnny Pearson led the Buckeyes with four goals and points, while freshman Tre Leclaire scored twice as the Buckeyes beat Furman 12-6 on Sunday.
  • Seniors Austin Shanks and JT Blubaugh each had a goal and an assist.
  • Senior Tom Carey had 11 saves in the Buckeye cage, while senior Jake Withers and freshman Christina Feliziani combined for 13 faceoff wins.

No. 19 Women's Gymnastics

  • On the heels of a career day from junior Alexis Mattern, Ohio State earned a 195.775-194.300 win over Rutgers Saturday afternoon at St. John Arena.
  • Mattern won three events (uneven bars, floor and vault) and placed first in the all-around with a career-best score of 39.400.

Synchronized Swimming

  • Ohio State posted 93 points on Saturday as it bested Michigan (71) and Wright State (12).
  • The trio of Emma Baranski, Morgan Boneberg and Elizabeth Davidson lit up the pool to a score of 82.2000.
  • In the duet, Baranski and Davidson notched a season-best score of 83.0667 to take first in the event.
  • Swimming her elegant solo routine for the second straight competition, defending national champion Baranski registered a score of 83.5000 to win the event.

No. 22 Women's/No. 18 Men's Swimming

  • Both the women's (153-88) and men's (153-103) both knocked off Wright State Friday evening as they celebrated Senior Day.
  • Lindsey Clary and Taylor Vargo, two of five senior women honored, claimed individual races on Friday; Clary won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.71 and Vargo won the 200 IM at 2:06.78, the third time she's won that event as a Buckeye.
  • Josh Fleagle, Joey Long and Andrew Appleby, three of five senior men honored, claimed individual races on Friday; Fleagle won the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.24. Long was the fastest swimmer in the 500 freestyle with a readout of 4:40.53. Appleby won the last individual event of the evening, the 200 IM, touching the wall at 1:51.04.

Track and Field

  • Sade Olatoye (weight throw), Nick Demaline (shot put), Deshawn Marshall (60m dash) and DaJuan Seward (triple jump) all won individual titles in their respective events at the Armory Invite.
  • The men's 4x400m relay closed out the meet with the fastest time of the season (3:11.94) to take gold

Men's Basketball (14-10)

  • Ohio State beat Michigan on Saturday, 70-66.
  • Marc Loving scored 17 points and Trevor Thompson had 13 points to go along with 11 boards in the win.
  • Jae'Sean Tate chipped in with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and a block.
