NCAA Student Assistance Fund (SAF)
The Student Assistance Fund (SAF) is a program run through the NCAA which distributes money to member institutions with the purpose of providing student-athletes with access to funding to help offset costs that athletic scholarships do not cover. Student-athletes do not have to be on an athletic scholarship to receive the benefits of SAF. Through SAF, Ohio State can assist student-athletes with:


NCAA Student Assistance Fund

Health Insurance
Domestic Student-Athletes:
  • 100% of Ohio State health insurance for student-athletes who have filed their FAFSA and qualify for a Pell Grant
International Student-Athletes:
  • 100% of Ohio State health insurance (minus 14% tax) for all international student-athletes
Parking Passes
  • Available to all student-athletes who have registered their vehicle with the Compliance Office, show proof of payment of a parking pass, and who have submitted an SAF Form to the Compliance Office.
  • Student-athletes must apply for reimbursement every academic year.
Graduate School Entrance Exams (e.g., LSAT, GRE)
  • Available to all student-athletes who can show proof of payment of a graduate entrance exam and who have submitted an SAF Form to the Compliance Office.
  • Student-athletes may only receive this reimbursement once.
$500 Travel & Clothing Assistance Stipend
Domestic Student-Athletes:
  • Available to those student-athletes who have filed their FAFSA and qualify for a Pell Grant.
  • Student-athletes must file a FAFSA and be Pell Eligible to continue receiving this stipend.
International Student-Athletes:
  • Available to those student-athletes who complete the International SAF Application and are deemed to qualify by the Financial Aid Office.
  • Student-athletes must apply for the stipend every academic year.
  • Student-athletes will be taxed 14% on the $500 stipend.
Family Emergencies
  • Available to all student-athletes. SAF support for family emergencies must be preapproved by the student-athlete‚Äôs sport administrator.
