Student-Athlete Employment

Student-athletes wishing to seek employment during the academic year or vacation periods are required to register their employment with the Compliance Office. Student-athletes are also responsible for updating the Compliance Office with any changes in their employment status (e.g., quitting job, beginning new job).

Compensation may be provided to a student-athlete:

  • Only for work that is actually performed;
  • At the going rate in the locality for similar services; and
  • Not based on the value the student-athlete has for an employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame, or personal following obtained because of his or her athletic ability.
Fee-for-Lesson Instruction:

It is permissible for student-athletes (except for golf student-athletes under USGA rules) to receive compensation for teaching or coaching sports skills or techniques on a fee-for-lesson basis, provided:

  • Ohio State facilities are not used to provide the lesson;
  • When lessons for multiple individuals are provided, the instruction each individual receives is comparable to the instruction that would be provided during a private lesson;
  • The student-athlete completes and submits the Fee for Lesson Form to his/her compliance contact;
  • Payment for the lesson is provided from no one other than the recipient or the recipient's family; and
  • The student-athlete does not use his or her name, picture, or appearance to promote or advertise the availability for fee-for-lesson sessions.
Camp/Clinic Employment

It is permissible for student-athletes to be employed as counselors at an institutional or non-institutional camp or clinic provided:

  • The student-athlete registers and receives prior approval from the Compliance Office;
  • The student-athlete is paid at the going rate for all camp counselors of similar teaching ability and camp experience;
  • The student-athlete performs duties that are of a general supervisory nature, in addition to any coaching or officiating assignments;
  • If the student-athlete only lectures or demonstrates at a camp or clinic, the student-athlete does not receive compensation; and
  • The student-athlete does not conduct his or her own camp.
