Hunter Bishop scores first goal of the season and nabs shootout goal to help Buckeyes to two CCHA points

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Ohio State men's hockey team rallied twice to tie No. 11/8 Notre Dame by a score of 2-2 at the Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Ind. The Buckeyes then won the shootout, 2-1, to take the extra point in the CCHA standings.

Ohio State is now 2-5-1 overall with a 1-2-1-1 record in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Notre Dame is 4-3-1 with a 1-0-1-0 mark in the CCHA.

The Buckeyes and Irish exchanged goals in the first period for a 1-1 tie at the first intermission. Both teams took advantage of power play opportunities to get on the board. Notre Dame tallied first at 14:56, just 10 seconds into the power play, as Riley Sheahan fired a shot that snuck in between OSU goalie Cal Heeter and the pipe, tucked under Heeter's right arm. Sheahan was assisted by Ian Cole and Kyle Lawson.

Ohio State knotted the score with a last-minute goal before the intermission. From the top of the slot, John Albert fed the puck down to Hunter Bishop at the right doorstep. Bishop wound up for the one-timer past ND netminder Brad Phillips with 37 seconds left. Freshman Devon Krogh picked up the second assist on the goal.

After a scoreless second period, the teams once again traded goals power play goals in the third period. With three seconds left on their man-advantage, Notre Dame regained the lead at 2-1 as Lawson scored from low in the right circle on a shot that slipped past Heeter at 2:31.

The Buckeyes responded at 5:02 when, while skating through the slot, Zac Dalpe scored unassisted on a wrist shot over Phillip's glove.

Following a scoreless 5-minute overtime, the teams both entered their first shootouts of the season. Albert went first, scoring five-hole, and ND's Maday responded with a goal over the left shoulder to even it at 1-all. Dalpe missed as the Buckeyes' second shooter, but Bishop gave them the lead again at 2-1 with another five-hole goal. Heeter held strong on the other end, saving shots by Calle Ridderwall and Ben Ryan to secure the shootout victory.

Both teams were 2-of-3 on the power play. Ohio State had a 32-26 advantage in shots. Heeter moved to 2-1-1 this season while Phillips is 1-3-1.

After back-to-back road series, Ohio State next returns to Columbus for two home CCHA series. The Buckeyes open against Northern Michigan (Nov. 6-7) and then face Western Michigan (Nov. 13-14) at Value City Arena.

Game Notes:

  • The goal by the Buckeyes in the third period was only the second time they have scored in the stanza this season.
  • With his goal, Hunter Bishop recorded his first point on the season. This was his first weekend back after missing the first three series of the season with an injury.
  • It was even offensive output as seven different Buckeyes had three shots on goal.
  • Dalpe is on a five-game scoring streak and has a team-best six points
