COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s swimming and diving team travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the 2009 Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships. The competition, held at the Canham Natatorium, takes place Feb. 19-21.
The Buckeyes are coming off a 5-4 dual meet season under first-year head coach Bill Dorenkott. This season, the team faced a tough Big Ten schedule and finished 0-3 in conference competition.

The Big Ten Network will televise the 2009 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships at noon on Sunday, March 1.
2008 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Ohio State University played host to the 2008 Big Ten Championships, where the Buckeyes came away with an eighth place finish with 218 points. Ohio State was represented in the championships and consolation finals in 6 different events. Anita Beck scored points in three events, while Katelyn Brix scored in two. Buckeye diver Bianca Alvarez earned second and third on the three-meter and one-meter, respectively. Kristen Asman captured second on the platform.
OHIO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
The Big Ten women’s swimming and diving team championships have been contested since 1982. The Buckeyes showed dominance in the conference early, winning the first five championships (‘82-’86) under Jim Montrella. During that period, Ohio State earned two Swimmer of the Year honors in Janelle Bosse (‘85-’86) and two Diver of the Year awards in Karen LaFace (‘85-’86).
The Buckeyes are second in the conference in all-time Big Ten champions with 77 and are tied for first with 22 Big Ten Diving champions.
LAST MEET - WEST VIRGINIA
The Buckeyes closed out its dual meet season with a 165-77 win over West Virginia on Feb. 6 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The team honored its three seniors before the meet: Courtney Brayman, Griet Buelens and Whitney Hackman.
Buelens led the team with wins in the 200 freestyle (1:51.11), 100 freestyle (51.76) and 100 butterfly (56.60). Junior Colleen Schweitzer captured both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, while Samantha Cheverton, Jill Lockhart and Lisa Narum each won an event.
NCAA CUT TIMES
Samantha Cheverton has recorded two NCAA “B” cut times so far this season: in the 200 backstroke (1:57.32) and 500 freestyle (4:49.39).
INDIVIDUAL WINS
With three wins against West Virginia, senior co-captain Griet Buelens leads the team with 10 wins, while sophomore Samantha Cheverton is second with eight wins. Freshman Natalie Nichols, junior co-captain Jill Lockhart and sophomore diver Kristen Asman have six individual wins.
COACH BILL DORENKOTT
Head women’s swimming coach Bill Dorenkott is in his first season as head coach. He was named head coach in April 2008 after having served as head coach of the Penn State women’s swimming team for the past 10 years and its men’s team for seven years.
Dorenkott has experienced success over his years of coaching. He coached the Penn State women to Big Ten Conference championships in 2002, 2005 and 2006. He has coached 27 different student-athletes to 32 Big Ten individual championships.
ABOUT DIVING COACH VINCE PANZANO
Vince Panzano, who was named the 2008 NCAA Women’s Diving Coach of the Year, guided Chelsea Davis and Bianca Alvarez to a 1-2 finish on the three-meter competition at the 2008 NCAA championships. He has a total of four NCAA Diving Coach of the Year and nine Big Ten Coach of the Year honors. He has produced one world champion, one junior world champion, two Olympic medalists, 22 U.S. Diving champions, 12 NCAA champions, 16 NCAA runners-up, 54 Big Ten champions and 75 NCAA All-Americans.
