COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 21 Buckeyes won their sixth-consecutive match, a 1-0 decision over rival Michigan in the Big Ten opener Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

The win marked the Buckeyes fourth-consecutive shutout and sixth in the last seven games.

"Our biggest challenge was getting through the frustration that the game presented," Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach, said. "We had limited space but we were fortunate that the ball found its way into the net and we'll take it."

From the opening kick, the Wolverines opted to try to pack it in against a Buckeye team that had scored 10 goals over the past three matches.

Ohio State was quiet early but scored on an own goal in the 19th minute. Junior midfielder Lauren Steuer played a cross into the box that deflected off Michigan defender Sarah Stanczyk and into the back of the net giving the Buckeyes the 1-0 advantage.

Less than two minutes later the Buckeyes had another excellent scoring opportunity but sophomore Paige Maxwell's shot went just wide left off a cross from freshman Tiffany Cameron.

In the first half, Ohio State held a 6-1 shot advantage and a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

The second half was more of the same as neither team was able to muster much in the way of opportunities. The Buckeyes best chance happened in the 83rd minute when freshman Kendyl Reed made a nice run down the right wing and dribbled inside the box but her cross was cleared out of the box by a Michigan defender.

For the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Wolverines 13-1 and held a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Buckeyes (8-1-1, 1-0-0 Big Ten) will now have another week of before they travel to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions 1 p.m. Oct. 4.
