COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior goalkeeper Lauren Robertson broke Amber Barnes' career shutout record with 23 as the Buckeyes topped North Texas, 2-0, Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Until Robertson, no Ohio State goalkeeper had come close to the record that Barnes set in 2000.
"It's a nice milestone for any keeper but one must give a lot of credit to our entire defense," head coach Lori Walker said. "The shutout is something we value greatly late in games and "Taz" has come up with some excellent performances during her career here."
The Buckeyes had an early opportunity less than two minutes in when Lauren Steuer's attempt to finish back post hit the crossbar after a nice cross from Caitlyn Martin.
After scoring three goals on headers last Friday against Youngstown State, it would be more of the same for Ohio State as sophomore Colleen Brady scored her first career goal when she snuck open back post to convert Lauren Beachy's corner kick into a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
With the Buckeyes controlling possession for most of the first half, junior Courtney Jenkins would drill a shot far post from 18 yards out off of a rebound in the 35th minute to push the lead to 2-0 Ohio State where it would stand at the half.
The Buckeyes outshot the Mean Green 9-1 in the first half including 4-0 on goal.
A very physical second included only three combined shots on goal. The shot on goal by Kelsey Perlman in the 79th minute was the first shot on goal against the Buckeyes in nearly one hundred and fifty minutes of play.
The best Ohio State opportunity occurred with just under four minutes left to play when freshman Lauren Granberg trapped a corner by Ali Schwach just inside the six yard box but her volley sailed just high.
For the game, the Buckeyes attempted 16 total shots compared to just three for the Mean Green.
"I was pleased with our energy level and the intensity that we came out with after the week off," Walker added. "We had some quality training this week and really worked on attacking defenses and tonight it paid dividends."
The Buckeyes, 6-1-1 overall and winners of their last five matches, will take on in-state foe and three-time defending MAC champion Toledo at noon Sunday. It will be Parents' Day at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
