COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State had its largest scoring output in almost five years as they knocked off Youngstown State, 6-0, Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

"This was the toughest eight days in program history," head coach Lori Walker said. "I'm proud of the way they came out with energy after the West Coast trip. They took advantage of every opportunity and fed off each other."

Despite returning from the West Coast just over 24 hours earlier, the Buckeyes did not come out sluggish as sophomore Paige Maxwell got on the board twice early with a pair of headers.

The first tally came less than nine minutes in when Maxwell out-muscled a pair of Penguin defenders for a header from inside the six yard box off a nice corner from junior Lauren Beachy.

Less than eight minutes later, Beachy and Lauren Steuer would assist on a Maxwell header after Steuer played a beautiful ball in from the wing to put the Buckeyes up 2-0.

The Buckeyes would continue to put pressure on YSU goalkeeper Nicole Kline when freshman Kayla Eckman slipped behind the defense in the 38th minute for a one-on-one with Kline put her shot slid just wide right.

Ohio State went into the half with a 2-0 lead and outshot the Penguins 10-2 including 3-1 on goal.

The second stanza started out much like the first as the Buckeyes kept the applying pressure in the 58th minute when Caitlyn Martin controlled the ball with her back to the goal and fired just high.

Just minutes later, Maxwell would finish off her second career hat trick when she received the ball just outside the box, beat a defender and her shot caromed off the keeper and into the net. It marked the eighth hat trick in Ohio State history and the second by Maxwell in her short career thus far. Her first hat trick came in a 3-2 win over Iowa Oct. 17 of last year.

The Buckeyes would continue to pour it on in the 68th minute when freshman Lauren Granberg controlled the ball on the left wing, dribbled past a defender and beat the goalkeeper near post.

Less than five minutes later, the freshman would put Ohio State up 5-0 on a header off a corner from junior Ali Schwach.

The Buckeyes would cap the scoring off in the 78th minute when freshman Kendyl Reed scored her first career goal when she made a far post run and finished off a perfect through ball from sophomore Brooke Taylor.

The six Buckeye goals were the most since an eight goal output against Xavier in 2004. For the match, Ohio State outshot the Penguins 25-2 and 9-1 on goal.

The Buckeyes (5-1-1) will now have a week off before hosting North Texas at 8 p.m. Sept. 18.
