Eighth Ranked Men's Volleyball Rallies to defeat No. 6 Penn State, 3-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The eighth-ranked Ohio State (19-2, 7-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men's volleyball team overcame a 2-1 lead by sixth-ranked Penn State (17-6) to defeat the Nittany Lions, 3-2 (20-30, 30-27, 19-30, 30-20, 15-13) Wednesday night in front of 1,006 fans in St. John Arena. Ohio State's Sam Stevens (5th/Sr., Miami, Fla.) scored a team-high 19.5 points for the Buckeyes with John Albertson (Jr./So., Ballwin, Mo.) adding 17.5. Stevens had a team-high 15 kills (.267), adding three ace serves and three assist blocks. Albertson recorded 13 kills (.348) and had a match-high nine assist blocks. Penn State's Alex Gutor posted a match-high 22.5 points in the match with Max Lipsitz adding 20. Gutor had a match-high 21 kills (.472), an ace serve and one assist block. Lipsitz recorded 14 kills (.478), four ace serves, a solo block and two assist blocks.

Trailing 5-3 in game one, Penn State with an OSU error, two ace serves from Lipsitz and a Max Holt kill took a 7-5 lead. The Nittany Lions would hold the lead and win the game off an Ohio State error at 30-20. The Nittany Lions hit .545 for the game to .259 for Ohio State.

Tied at one in game two, Penn State used two kills from Gutor and one from Matt Anderson to open a 4-1 lead. The Nittany Lions held a 14-11 lead when a Penn State error, a Robbie Klein (Jr./So., Cincinnati, Ohio)- Layne Dreven (5th/Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and another PSU error tied the game at 14. Tied at 16, a Buckeye error and a Lipsitz kill gave Penn State an 18-16 lead. Buckeye kills from Albertson and Daniel Mathews (Jr., Shorewood, Wis.) and a Penn State error gave Ohio State a 19-18 lead. A Buckeye error tied the game at 19. An Albertson kill and a Penn State error put Ohio State ahead, 21-19. At 24-22, OSU, a Buckeye error and a Gutor kill tied the game at 24. A Dreven kill and two Albertson - Brett Versen (Sr./Jr., Centerville, Ohio) blocks gave Ohio State a 27-24 lead. An OSU error made it 27-25. An Albertson kill and a solo block by Mathews set game point for Ohio State at 29-25. A Gutor kill and a Buckeye error cut the margin to 29-27. A Penn State service error ended the game at 30-27 for Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit .458 in the game to .143 for Penn State.

Ohio State overcame an 8-6 Penn State lead in game three with a five point scoring run. It began with two kills from Stevens and kills from Klein and Albertson and a Nittany Lion error to take an 11-8 lead. Penn State responded with a seven point run starting with a Holt kill and an OSU error. A block by Gutor and Holt tied the game at 11. Two kills from Holt, one from Gutor and an OSU error made it 15-11, Penn State. The Nittany Lions controlled the game and reached game point at 29-18 with a Holt kill. An Albertson kill stopped the game point at 29-19. An Anderson kill ended the game at 30-19, Penn State and gave the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead in the match. Penn State hit .464 for the game to .062 for Ohio State.

Ohio State opened game four with a kill from Stevens and a Versen-Albertson block for a 2-0 lead. At 3-2, a Penn State error, an Albertson-Mathews block and a kill from Stevens took the lead to 6-2. The Buckeyes never trailed in the game and won the game, 30-20, with a Klein kill to tie the match at 2-2. The Buckeyes hit .500 in the game to .000 for Penn State.

A Versen kill and a Dreven ace serve opened game five for Ohio State with a 2-0 lead. An OSU error made it 2-1. A kill from Stevens and a Versen ace serve made it 4-1, OSU. A Lipsitz kill, and his solo block and an OSU error tied the game at four. A Versen kill, a Penn State error and an ace serve from Stevens gave Ohio State a 7-4 lead. Kills from Gutor and Klein moved the score to 8-5. A Buckeye error and a Lipsitz ace serve cut the OSU lead to one at 8-7. Kills from Dreven and Klein gave the Buckeyes a 10-7 lead. A Penn State triple block by Aaron Smith, Holt and Anderson with a Klein kill moved the score to 11-8. Penn State rallied with four straight points to take a 12-11 lead. The run began with kills from Anderson and Gutor, a Holt-Luke Murray block and an OSU error. The Buckeyes tied the game at 12 with a kill by Stevens. A Dreven solo block made it 13-12, OSU. A Penn State error set match point at 14-12. An OSU service error stopped the match point at 14-13. Ohio State, with an Albertson kill, ended the game at 15-13 and winning the match, 3-2. Penn State hit .300 for the game to .235 for Ohio State.

For the match, Penn State hit .280 to Ohio State's .276. The Nittany Lions had a 59-56 edge in kills while each squad had seven ace serves. Penn State's Lipsitz collected a match-high four ace serves in the contest. The Buckeyes gave up 27 service errors to 22 for the Nittany Lions. Defensively, Penn State had a 29-24 advantage in digs. Libero Ryan Walthall had a match-high 11 digs for the Nittany Lions. At the net, Ohio State had a 15 to 11 edge in team blocks. OSU's Albertson produced a match-high nine assist blocks in the match. Murray had a match-high 49 assists for Penn State while OSU's Mathews recorded 47.

Ohio State continues a three-match home stand Friday when they host Quincy (5-22, 2-7) at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes and the Hawks play again Saturday at 4 p.m.
