11th Ranked Men's Volleyball Falls, 3-1 to No. 7 Penn State

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 11th-ranked Ohio State (7-1) men's volleyball dropped a 3-1 (30-32, 31-29, 30-27, 30-26) decision to No. 7 Penn State (3-2) Thursday night in Rec Hall. Ohio State's Dan Meske (Sr., Willow Springs, Ill.) had a team/career-high 20 points in the match while Penn State's Alex Gutor had a match-high 27.5. Meske had a career-high 17 kills (.406), two ace serves and two assist blocks while Gutor recorded 27 kills (353), and an assist block.

After a 1-1 tie in game one, a Penn State error, a Meske kill and a John Albertson (Jr./So., Ballwin, Mo.) - Sam Stevens (5th/Sr., Miami, Fla.) block made it 4-1, Ohio State. At 11-8, Penn State tied the game at 11 with an OSU error and two Gutor kills. Tied at 14, a Nittany Lion block by Max Lipsitz and Matt Anderson and an Anderson kill gave Penn State a 16-14 lead. The Nittany Lions built the lead to 24-18. With Penn State leading 27-22, a Meske kill, a Robbie Klein (Jr./So., Cincinnati, Ohio) ace serve, a Stevens - Layne Dreven (5th/Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) block and a Penn State error cut the lead to one at 27-26. At 28-27, a Holt kill set game point for Penn State at 29-27. An Albertson kill and a Meske ace serve stopped two game points to tie the game at 29. Ohio State took a 30-29 lead with an Albertson kill. A Holt kill tied the game at 30. A Meske kill gave OSU a 31-30 lead and a Penn State error ended the game, 32-30, for the Buckeyes. Penn State hit .314 for the game to .290 for Ohio State.

Penn State took a 3-1 lead in game two with a Holt kill and an OSU error from a 1-1 tie. At 7-5, a Dreven kill and a Meske ace serve tied the game at seven. At eight-all, a Klein ace serve and a kill from Stevens gave Ohio State a 10-8 lead. Trailing 11-9, an OSU error and a Jay Stauffer kill tied the game at 11. Tied at 12, Penn State, with a Gutor kill and an OSU error regained the lead at 14-12. At 17-15, two Penn State errors tied the game at 17. Tied at 26, an Aaron Smith-Max Lipsitz block and a Buckeye error gave the Nittany Lions a 28-26. OSU, with a Dreven kill and a Klein ace serve tied the game at 28. Penn State, with a Smith-Lipsitz-Anderson block, took a 29-28 lead and was serving game point. A kill by Dreven tied the game at 29. Gutor, with a kill, gave Penn State a 30-29 lead. Penn State, with a Smith kill, won the game, 31-29, to tie the match. The Nittany Lions hit .400 to .161 for Ohio State.

Penn State broke a 1-1 tie in game three with an OSU error, a Smith-Holt block and a Gutor kill to lead 4-1. The Nittany Lions built an eight-point lead at 23-15. Ohio State then used a six-point run to cut the lead to 23-21. Two ace serves by Daniel Mathews (Jr., Shorewood, Wis.) and a Dreven kill made it 23-18. An Penn State error, a Klein-Dreven block and a Meske kill completed the run. At 25-23, Penn State, two kills from Meske tied the game at 25. The Nittany Lions then scored four straight points to reach game point at 29-25. The run began with an OSU error. An Anderson kill, a Buckeye error and a Holt kill set game point. The Buckeyes stopped the game point with an Albertson kill at 29-26. A Meske ace serve stopped the second game point at 29-27. A Buckeye error ended the game at 30-27 for Penn State to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead. Penn State hit .410 for the game to .286 for the Buckeyes.

Game four saw 10 early ties to reach 12-all. Penn State kills from Anderson and Luke Murray put the Nittany Lions ahead, 14-12. Penn State expanded the lead to five at 27-22. An Albertson kill and a Penn State error cut the lead to 27-24. A Buckeye error and a Smith kill set match point at 29-24. The Buckeyes stopped two match points with kills from Mathews and Dreven to cut the lead to 29-26. Penn State won the game, 30-26, with an Ohio State error, to take the match 3-1. The Nittany Lions hit .481 in the game to .414 for Ohio State.

For the match, Penn State hit .397 to .286 for Ohio State. The Nittany Lions had a 73-60 advantage while Ohio State had a 12 to six margin in ace serves with Buckeye Mathews recording a match-high four. The Buckeyes gave up 19 service error to 16 for the Nittany Lions. Defensively, Penn State had a 45-30 advantage in digs. PSU's Smith recorded a match-high nine digs with OSU's Meske and Stevens collecting seven each. At the net, the Nittany Lions had a 9.5 to nine edge in team blocks. Penn State's Holt and Ohio State's Dreven shared match-high honors with five assist blocks each. Nittany Lion Murray posted a match-high 56 assists while OSU's Mathews had 55.

The Buckeyes continue the road trip Friday when they play at the Red Flash of St. Francis (4-2)
