Horanyi, Parkins, Momtselidze and Pryor shine in NCAA season precursor

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Members of the defending national champion Ohio State fencing team competed this past weekend at the Division I North American Cup in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The top performers for the Buckeyes came on the men’s side, with senior Mike Momtselidze coming in sixth in men’s sabre, senior Andras Horanyi finishing fifth in men’s foil and senior Jason Pryor coming in eighth in men’s epee. Sophomore Ben Parkins also put forth a successful showing, finishing eighth in men’s foil.

Other top performers included junior Joe Streb, who placed 17th in men’s foil, freshman Igor Tolkachev, who finished 21st in men’s epee, and junior Dexter Wilde, who came in 31st position in men’s sabre.

Women’s epee was the lone weapon group that competed on the women’s side, with Julia Tikhonova placing 37th, Elyse Gurnowski finishing 61st and Mary Pozydaev coming in 72nd.

The North American Cup (NAC) is the title of a series of national tournaments held throughout the country each year and serves as the point system used for determining spots on U.S. National teams. The next NAC competition will be held Jan. 16-19 in Louisville, Ky., one week after the Buckeyes open their collegiate regular season Jan. 10 at the Detroit Duals.
