Outfielder Zach Hurley, who hit .302 in 2008 for Ohio State, will be a junior on the 2009 team.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Zach Hurley, a junior outfielder for the Ohio State baseball team, has been named the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League’s (GLSCL) player of the week for his efforts playing for the first-place Cincinnati Steam.

Hurley hit .556 this past week, going 10-for-18 with six runs scored and four RBI. He also slugged at a .571 percentage as the Steam, 11-4 on the season, won three of five games to remain in first place in the league standings.

Hurley is currently leading the GLSCL with a .512 batting average (22-of-43) and with 14 runs scored. His two home runs are tied for the league lead and he also has contributed nine RBI to his hometown team. Hurley is from Springboro, Ohio, just outside of Cincinnati.

It’s Now Shuck vs. DeLucia in New York-Penn League
J.B. Shuck, who signed a professional baseball contract with the Houston Astros’ organization after getting drafted in the sixth round of the MLB Draft in June, and Dan DeLucia, now a member of the Detroit Tigers’ organization, each are playing in the Class A New York-Penn League.

  • Shuck is with the Tri-City Valley Cats, located in Troy, N.Y.
  • DeLucia is with the Oneonta Tigers, located in Oneonta, N.Y.
  • Shuck has played in 14 games as an outfielder and is hitting .298 (17-for-57) with two doubles, a triple and seven RBI. He also has three stolen bases. He is hitting .325 over his last 10 games.
  • Shuck is 0-1 vs. DeLucia. The two squared off against each other and DeLucia got Shuck to ground out.
  • DeLucia has pitched in three games and has a 3.38 earned run average and an 0-1 record.

Buckeye Pitchers Helping Luray
The Luray Wranglers of the Valley Baseball League (Va.), selected recently as one of the top 16 summer league teams in the latest PGCrosschecker.com’s Summer 16 rankings, are 13-6 on the season and a big reason is due to the efforts of three Ohio State pitchers on the roster: sophomores Alex Wimmers, Andrew Armstrong and Drew Rucinski. Here’s what each has done so far:

  • Wimmers is 2-0 with three saves and a 0.00 ERA in five appearances and 13.1 innings pitched. He has not allowed a run and has struck out 18 batters, walked just three and is limiting batters to a .114 batting average.
  • Rucinski has made three starts and is 0-1 with a 1.77 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched. He has struck out 21 batters (against just four walks) and is limiting opponents to a .225 batting average.
  • Armstrong is 2-0 with a 3.86 ERA. He, too, has made three starts for Luray and has pitched 16.1 innings. He has struck out 17 batters, walked six and allowed opponents to hit just .262.

Ohio State’s Summer Crop
Buckeye baseball players are playing in summer leagues around the country. Last year’s leading hitter, Justin Miller, is headlining the group by playing for the Falmouth Commodores in the competitive Cape Cod League. He has played in eight games so far and is hitting .241.

Here’s where some other Buckeyes are playing (and what they are up to):

  • Dean Wolosiansky, a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, is playing for Haymarket in the Valley Baseball League. “Wolo” is currently leading the staff with a 2.59 ERA. He is 1-2 and has pitched 24.1 innings and made four starts.
  • Josh Edgin is with Forest City Owls of the Coastal Plains League. He is 1-2 with a 3.05 ERA
  • Eric Best, who led the Buckeyes with eight saves this past year, is pitching for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in the Alaska League. In a game earlier this summer against So Cal, Best struck out three consecutive batters in the ninth inning to secure a 3-1 Glacier Pilots victory.
  • Among the hitters, both Ryan Dew and Cory Rupert are playing for the Columbus All-Americans of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. Rupert has played in 12 games and is hitting .379 (11-for-29) with five RBI. Dew has made 10 starts and has nine RBI.
  • Cory Kovanda and Ryan Meade are both playing for the Delaware Cows of the the GLSCL. Kovanda has played in five games and is hitting .412 (7-for-17). Meade has played in nine games and is hitting .250.
  • Dan Burkhart is up north, playing for the Mankato (Minn.) Moon Dogs of the Northwoods League. Burkhard has played in eight games and is hitting .400 (8-for-20).
