Release: 01/30/2008

2010 Overview: One of the most dominant pitchers in all of college baseball in 2009, the Buckeye ace looks to improve in his junior season. The 2010 preseason All-American and 2009 Big Ten co-Pitcher of the Year went 9-2 with 136 strikeouts last season. Right-handed hitters batted a paltry .190 against Alex in 2009 and he showed the ability to get off the mound quickly as opponents hit just .193 against him with two outs. Just as important, Wimmers proved to be a stopper for the Buckeyes, going 3-0, including a win on three days' rest at No. 2 Miami, in the regular season following an Ohio State loss.

2009 (Sophomore): Started 16 games as the Buckeye ace ... named PING! Baseball first-team All-American ... tabbed as a second- or third-team All-American by five other publications ... named Big Ten Conference co-Pitcher of the Year ... first-team All-Big Ten Conference ... four-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Week ... two-time National Pitcher of the Week (Louisville Slugger) ... semifinalist for the College Baseball Foundation National Pitcher of the Year Award and the Golden Spikes Award ... went 9-2 with a 3.27 ERA ... the Big Ten's strikeout leader with 136 in 104.2 innings pitched ... also led the conference with a .211 opposing batting average ... right-handers hit just .190 against Wimmers ... struck out 10 or more batters in seven starts ... threw the first nine-inning no-hitter in Buckeye history against Michigan ... set down 14 Wolverines via the punch out ... tossed six scoreless innings, striking out seven against Notre Dame in his first collegiate start to be named to the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge All-Tournament team ... gave up one earned run in 5.2 innings against George Mason ... picked up back-to-back complete game victories, striking out 29 over the two starts against Pittsburgh and Indiana ... defeated then-No. 1 Miami, tossing five hitless innings on three days' rest ... threw a complete game two-hitter, striking out seven against Michigan State ... struck out seven in seven shutout innings at Purdue ... pitched six shutout innings, striking out a dozen against Iowa ... picked up the win, going 6.1 innings and striking out nine against Illinois in his first postseason start.

2008 (Freshman): Pitched in 25 games, all in relief, and posted a 4.50 earned run average in 40.0 innings of work ... ranked seventh in the Big Ten in games finished and eighth in appearances and games in relief ... struck out 51 batters for a team-high average of 11.2 per nine innings pitched ... struck out 17 batters looking to lead the team ... limited opponent batters to a .236 average, second-lowest on the team ... picked up three saves (vs. Memphis in his first collegiate game and vs. Harvard and Eastern Michigan) ... pitched 3.0 innings of one-hit, no-run, five-strikeout baseball vs. Memphis ... closed the season with career-long 5.1 innings pitched in Big Ten tournament game vs. Indiana ... allowed just one earned run vs. Indiana while striking out two and scattering two hits.

Archbishop Moeller H.S.: A two-year starter and letterman for coach Mike Cameron, who retired after the 2007 season as the winningest baseball coach in Ohio high school history ... named first-team all-Ohio as a senior by the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association ...also named all-Greater Catholic League ... team finished 27-4 and won the district championship ... had a 0.89 ERA as a senior with 80 strikeouts in 55 innings ... finished high school career with 1.20 ERA and 143 strikeouts in 105 innings ... also batted .429 with 30 RBI ... career .457 average is highest in school history ... first pitcher to throw a perfect game in school history ... was a first-team all-city all-star and was voted the most outstanding player and best pitcher in the city all-star game as a junior.

Personal: Alex is the son of Jerry Wimmers and Bonnie Sterling ... has a brother, Mark, and a sister, Andrea ... one of four players from Archbishop Moeller on the Ohio State team this year (Dan Burkhart, Dave Corna and Ross Oltorik) ... lists ping-pong, Xbox Live, and bowling as his hobbies.
