BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Friday, the Buckeyes beat Indiana junior Monica Wright, 3-2, but they had no answer for her Saturday as Wright and the Hoosiers salvaged a split with the Ohio State softball team, winning 4-0 at the Indiana Softball Field in Bloomington.

Wright went the distance again and this time held the Buckeyes (24-15, 3-7 Big Ten) to one hit. The Hoosiers (12-27, 2-8 Big Ten) have managed splits with Ohio State the last three times the Buckeyes have come to Bloomington, but had not shut out Ohio State since 1997, a 21-game span.

Ohio State junior Kim Reeder, who struck out a career-high 12 batters in a complete-game victory Friday, went the distance again but suffers the loss to fall to 13-10. It marked her first loss in four career decisions to Indiana.

After hitting the game-winning home run in the Buckeyes’ 4-3 win Friday, sophomore Sam Marder, who entering the day ranked second in the Big Ten in RBI and batting average, was walked three times.

Indiana used a suicide squeeze bunt to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Julia Hamilton led off with an infield single and went to second on an OSU throwing error on the play. A sacrifice bunt got her to third and Emily Bergeson then bunted back to Reeder in the circle with Hamilton charging home on the play. Reeder fielded the bunt and flipped to Marder, but Hamilton slid in just ahead of the tag.

Reeder cruised through the second inning with three strikeouts and retired the first two Hoosiers in the third, but then walked a batter and gave up back-to-back singles to centerfield, the second coming from Jennilee Huddleston, as Indiana built its lead to 2-0.

The Buckeyes appeared to be on the brink of a big inning when freshman Brittany Goodchild led off the third with a single to left field, but Indiana turned a double play when OSU senior Liz Caputo lined to Wright in the circle and her throw to first was in time to get Goodchild scampering back.

Indiana tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Sara Olson bounced a two-out single up the middle to score Bergeson, who walked, and Tory Yamaguchi, who singled.

Ohio State last threatened in the sixth inning when senior Brittany Vanderink drew a lead-off walk and Marder also walked, putting two runners aboard with one out. They both moved into scoring position when freshman Karisa Medrano grounded out to the shortstop and sophomore Tory Haddad’s 12-pitch at bat was a battle, but ended with a strikeout to end the threat.

The Hoosiers loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but nifty defense from third-baseman Rachael Shepherd helped hold Indiana without a run. Two-straight grounders were hit he way and she fielded both of them and threw home to Marder for the force at the plate. On the second one, Marder fired to Haddad at first for an inning-ending double play.

Ohio State travels to West Lafayette, Ind., Saturday night and will face Purdue at noon Sunday in a doubleheader that will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
