Michael Cress shots even par as Ohio State sits tied for 11th at the Gilford Collegiate Championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Redshirt-freshman Jamie Sindelar led the Ohio State men's golf team with a score of 2-under in the opening round of the Gilford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle Monday in San Martin, Calif. The Buckeyes are tied for 11th out of the 14-team field with a team score of 368 (6-count-5) on the par 72, 7,169-yard course, matching Colorado and Oklahoma's totals.

Duke stands atop the leaderboard at 10-under 350, just ahead of Lamar and Oklahoma State at 352. Pedro Figueiredo of UCLA and Taylor Floyd of Augusta State carded the low rounds of the day with 67s.

After struggling on his first two holes with a bogey and triple-bogey, Sindelar quickly settled down and made par on his next four holes. On No. 7, the native of Horseheads, N.Y., started a four-hole birdie streak and added two more on Nos. 12 and 15 to move to 2-under. With a 70 in his first round of team collegiate action, Sindelar is tied for 12th and just a stroke away from breaking into the top 10.

Michael Cress also had a strong opening round for the Buckeyes with a 72. After starting with a bogey, the junior from Dublin, Ohio, made par on the remaining holes of the front nine. He moved to 2-under with birdies on Nos. 10, 11 and 15 before bogeys on two of his last three holes to return to even-par and tie for 32nd.

Freshman Matthew Turner, from Dubai, UAE, was 1-over with a round of 73 that included four birdies and five bogeys to tie for 41st, followed by junior Bo Hoag tied for 50th at 74. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native made par on 14 holes and, after carding three bogeys on the front nine, Hoag closed with a birdie on 18.

Rounding out the Ohio State lineup are senior Brad Wright with a 79 to tie for 86th and rookie Johnny Henno with an 81 for 88th place.

The Gilford Collegiate Championship at CordeValle, Ohio State's final fall tournament, continues with single rounds Tuesday and Wednesday. Tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. (PT) and live scoring is available on www.golfstat.com.
