OFFENSIVE NOTES
Sophomore Ray Small caught a 26-yard pass from Todd Boeckman with just over 8 minutes to play in the first quarter to give the Buckeyes a 7-0 lead after a 9-play, 87-yard scoring drive. Small has two scoring grabs this season and three in his career.
Small finished with a career-high 70 yards on a career-best six catches.
Brian Hartline caught a 6-yard pass for a score with 4:48 to play in the opening quarter for a 14-0 Ohio State lead. Hartline has three catches for scores this season and five over his career.
Hartline’s 41-yard reception in the third quarter was a career long catch. He finished with four catches for 61 yards.
Boeckman has found 14 receivers for scores this season for a career total of 15 TD passes.
In his past 14 quarters, Boeckman is 54-of-83 passing (65 percent) for 749 yards with 10 TDs.
DEFENSIVE NOTES
Ohio State has now held five of six opponents to seven or fewer points on the season.
Anderson Russell sacked Purdue quarterback Curtis Painter twice. He has three this season and four career sacks.
Larry Grant’s first-half sack of Painter was his third of the season. He has 3.5 sacks as a Buckeye.
Through five games, the Buckeye defense has forced the opponent to go three-and-out on 42 possessions. Ohio State set a school record with 13 consecutive three-and-out series in the Ak¬ron game. SPECIAL TEAMS
Junior Andrew Good saw his first action as a Buckeye handling kickoff duties to start the game. That effort went for a touchback.
Punter A.J. Trapasso also made his debut on the kickoff team after Ohio State’s opening score of the game. His effort went for a touchback as well.
Trapasso later added a 61-yard punt in the third quarter.
Ryan Pretorius made three field goal attempts Saturday. The first was a 44 yarder, a season-long effort. For his career, Pretorius is 11-of-14, including 10-of-12 in 2007.
Junior Shaun Lane caused a second-quarter fumble on kickoff coverage after Ohio State made it 17-0 on a Pretorius field goal. Sophomore Aaron Gant recovered the fumble for the Buckeyes. Both efforts were career firsts.
MISCELLANEOUS
Ohio State’s honorary captain for the Purdue game was William White, a four-year letterman with the Buckeyes from 1984-87. White earned All-America and All-Big Ten honors as a defensive back before playing 11 years in the National Football League
