Gray sophomore quarterback Terrelle Pryor went 13-of-18 for a game-high 191 yards and two touchdowns Saturday in Ohio Stadium.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – In front of a national spring game national attendance record 95,722 Buckeye fans, the Gray squad defeated Scarlet, 23-3, Saturday at Ohio Stadium. The scrimmage broke the Ohio State spring game attendance record for the fourth-consecutive season as the Buckeyes concluded their annual spring practice.

A crowd of 76,346 braved soggy conditions in Ohio Stadium last year to watch the Scarlet team defeat the Gray, 20-7, in the 2008 Spring Game.

For the Gray team Saturday, junior wide receiver Taurian Washington caught four passes for 92 yards and scored one touchdown. Senior wide receiver Ray Small also caught four passes for 74 yards with one touchdown. Fifth-year senior Marcus Williams rushed for 94 yards on six carries, while junior running back Brandon Saine ran for 55 yards on six carries.

For the Scarlet squad, running back Dan “Boom” Herron ran for 43 yards on 10 carries. Scarlet was led receiving by true freshman wide receiver James Jackson who had 51 yards on three receptions, while sophomore wide receiver DeVier Posey had 46 yards on five catches.

Gray sophomore starting quarterback Terrelle Pryor went 13-of-18 with a game-high 191 yards passing and two touchdowns. Scarlet starting quarterback Joe Bauserman went 10-of-21 with 119 yards and one interception.

After Scarlet fumbled the first offensive snap of the scrimmage at the Scarlet 22-yard line, Gray took an early 3-0 advantage after a 31-yard field goal (10:23) by fifth-year senior place kicker Aaron Pettrey.

A highlight of the scrimmage was when the Gray offense came alive with less than five minutes remaining in the first half.

After a Scarlet punt, Pryor led the offense down the field, completing 6-of-7 passes. With 31 seconds left, Pryor found Washington open down the left sideline for a 44-yard touchdown pass making the score 10-0 in favor of the Gray squad.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Gray special teams faked the Scarlet squad as Pettrey completed and recovered his own onside kick at the Gray 41-yard line (:31). On 3rd and 10, Pryor found another open receiver in Small, who caught a 42-yard strike down the right sideline and slipped his way into the end zone with one second remaining, making the score at half all Gray, 17-0. The Gray scoring drive was five plays for 59 yards in just 38 seconds.

Scarlet controlled the time of possession (12:50) in the first half, but could not put up any points to show for half against the Gray.

Scarlet starting running back Herron led all rushers at halftime with 37 yards on seven carries. Bauserman went 3-of-8 with 25 yards at halftime, while backup quarterback Justin Siems was 3-of-5 from the field with 21 yards.

In the second half, Saine got into the action as the Gray squad began to pound the football on the ground. Saine ran for 55 yards on six carries during the drive. The Gray drive ended with a 41-yard field-goal (7:00) from Pettrey adding to a 20-0 lead.

Scarlet recorded its first points of the scrimmage in the third quarter, making it a 20-3 score after a 43-yard field goal from Scarlet place kicker Devin Barclay (4:17).

Williams broke out the longest run of the day with a 75-yard sprint to the Scarlet 8-yard line (4:17), leading to the third Gray field goal. This time Pettrey nailed from 23 yards out for the final score of the game, 23-3.
