WR: Humphrey, Triggas Claim First at University National Championships

Humphrey and Triggas will compete at the U.S. World Team Trials May 30-31 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

COLUMBUS, OhioReece Humphrey and Nikko Triggas, members of the Ohio State wrestling team, put on a show at the University National Championships last weekend at the University of Akron, collecting a combined three titles at the event.

After finishing in the Top 2, Humphrey and Triggas are now qualified for the U.S. World Team Trials slated for May 30-31 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. A year ago, Humphrey was a World University silver medalist in freestyle.

Humphrey, who ended his junior season with a second-place finish at the NCAA championships in 133 the pound division in March, walked away with two first-place finishes. On Friday, the Indianapolis, Ind., native captured the 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Greco-Roman title and again made his way to the top of the podium at the freestyle championships Sunday.

En route to his Greco-Roman championship, Humphrey pinned Anthony Jerome of Binghamton (Pin 0-1, 2-0, 0:20), posted a technical fall to rout Chad Vandiver of Sunkist Kids (TF 6-0, 3-8, 6-0) and earned a 3-0, 7-0 decision over Josh Strait of the Bronco Wrestling Club in the finals.

In the freestyle title bout, Humphrey, who was down 0-1 to David Marble of Bucknell after the first before taking a 6-1 lead in the second period to hold on for the win. Just an hour before the freestyle finals, Humphrey defeated Big Ten-rival Mike Thorn of Minnesota in the semifinals.

Also on Friday, Triggas recorded a 0-4, 4-0, 2-0 decision over David Armstrong of Underdog WC to nab the 60 kg/132 lbs. University Greco-Roman championship. In the semifinals, the California native earned an 8-2, 0-7, 2-1 decision vs. Tony Mustari of Bears Wrestling Club. In his first match of the day, Triggas won a 7-0, 2-0 decision over Sam Sheppard of Falcon Training Club.
