Ohio State cards team score of 323 at Caves Valley Golf Club outside of Baltimore

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Ohio State women’s golf team opened the first round of the 2009 NCAA Championships with a team score of 323 (+35)  Tuesday on the par 72, 6,443-yard Caves Valley Golf Club outside of Baltimore. The Buckeyes are in 24th place entering the second round of the 72-hole tournament.

Only three teams broke the 300-mark with Denver leading the field at 6-over 294. UCLA is second at 8-over and North Carolina is in third at 11-over. Only seven strokes separate Nos. 4-14 in the standings.

Leading the Buckeyes was junior co-captain Emma Jandel who fired a round of 75. Starting on the back nine, the Dayton, Ohio, native opened with a birdie and totaled three on the side with two bogeys.

After making the turn and moving to even with a bogey on No. 1, Jandel moved to 1-under with a beautiful shot on the par 3 No. 4, with a drive that rolled within three feet from the hole. But she followed with bogey-bogey and stumbled with a double bogey on her last hole to finish 3-over and tie for 25th.

Big Ten Freshman of the Year Vicky Villanueva also had a strong performance to open nationals. After a tough start of bogey-double bogey on her first two holes, the native of Chacabuco, Argentina, settled down and was just 3-over on the remaining 16 holes. She finished with a 6-over 78 that included two birdies to tie for 60th.

Also for the Buckeyes, sophomore In Hong Lim carded an 83 to tie for 112th, while senior co-captain Gemma Webster tallied an 87 to tie for 121st. Senior Jessica Hauser rounded out the OSU lineup and is in 126th place after an opening 93.

Second round tee times for the NCAA championships begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday, with times moved back 30 minutes than previously scheduled because of anticipated overnight frost. The Buckeyes will tee off of hole No. 1 between 12:30-1:10 p.m. Live scoring for the NCAA Championships is available on www.golfstat.com.
