COLUMBUS, Ohio - Described as the best class of swimmers to sign National Letters of Intent (NLI) with Ohio State in possibly three decades, Ohio State swimming coach Bill Wadley today announced the class of seven high school seniors who have signed NLIs to compete for the Buckeyes next season.
"This is an exciting class and it is certainly the best class in terms of overall ability we've signed out of high school in my 21 years and possibly in the last three decades," Wadley said.
The seven new Buckeyes are:
- Brett Boston, from Matthew, N.C. and David W. Butler High School. His club team is New South Swimming and he is coached by Jamie Thomas.
- Ryan Bubb, from Lincoln, Neb. and Lincoln East High School. He also swims for the Heartland Aquatics club team. His coaches are Greg Fleming (Lincoln) and Eric Wiken (Heartland).
- Kevin Lancki, from Parma, Ohio and Valley Forge High School. His club team is the Berea Midpark Swim Club. He is coached by Will Curry.
- Ty Perkins is from Centerville, Ohio and Centerville High School. He also competes for KEY Swimming. He is coached by Eric Limkemann (Centerville) and Eric Wentzel (KEY).
- David (Dak) Stone is from Birnamwood, Wisc. He is homeschooled and competes for the Wausau TIDE club team coached by Abby Dunham.
- Garrett Trebilcock is from Canfield, Ohio and Canfield High School. His club team is Penguin Swimming. He is coached by Andrea Linelli (Canfield) and Greg McAtee (Penguin).
- Joe Wulf is from Munster, Ind. and Munster High School and he also competes for the Munster Swim Club. He is coached by Matt Lee (Munster H.S.) and Matt Pavlovich (Munster SC).
The three national youth team members - there are about 40 national youth team members each year whose best times are among the Top 6 in their respective events in the nation - arrive one year after Ohio State signed its first national youth team member last year: Tim Phillips from Vienna, W.Va. Wadley and assistant coach Jessen Book had 10 such recruits on campus this fall - another program best - and signing the trio of Boston, Bubb and Stone represents a signature moment in the program's history.
"The entire recruiting class is an accomplished class," Wadley said. "With the finest swimming facility in the nation, coupled with a really competitive team and the academic integrity of Ohio State, this class has made the statement that we can compete against the best schools in the country for the best athletes."
Boston is the junior national champion in the 400 freestyle and he has the fastest times of any Ohio State recruit - ever - in the middle and distance freestyle events. His top times: 200 Free - 1:40.56/1:52.85*; 500/400 Free - 4:27.89/3:56.03; 1000/800 Free - 9:13.61/8:19.22; 1650/1500 Free - 15:44.52/15:53.78; 100 Back - 50.39/59.50*; 200 Fly - 2:02.71*.
Bubb is the nation's No. 3 ranked swimmer in the 50 freestyle. He is also an excellent racer in the 100 butterfly, according to Wadley. His top times: 50 Free - 20.66/23.19*; 100 Free - 51.62*; 100 Fly - 48.92/54.93*.
Lancki will be seeking to represent Valley Forge at the Ohio state championship swim meet for a fourth consecutive year this spring. He is a high school All-American in the 100 fly and a scholastic All-American who also swims the backstroke. His top times: 50 Back - 24.13; 100 Back - 51.21.
Four-time YMCA distance freestyle national champion Perkins is a two-time high school All-American who has won the past two 1,500-meter championships at the long course nationals. He also is the long course 800 freestyle record-holder. His top times include: 500/400 Free - 4:28.15/4:05.04; 1000/800 Free - 9:13.77/8:25.05; 1650/1500 Free - 15:28.04/15:59.42; 400 IM - 4:04.93/4:38.26*.
Stone has the nation's fifth-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke and he is the Wisconsin state record-holder in the event. He is also a formidable individual medley swimmer. His top times: 100 Breast - 55.98/1:04.06*; 200 Breast - 2:01.12/2:18.56*; 200 IM - 1:53.84/2:10.50*; 400 IM - 4:02.98/4:40.64*.
Trebilcock is coming off a junior season in which he qualified for the Ohio state championships in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly. He also swims freestyle events. His top times: 100 Free - 52.78*; 100 Back - 58.80*; 100 Fly - 57.15*; 200 Fly - 2:06.79*; 200 IM - 2:06.94*.
Wulf, a breaststroke and individual medley swimmer, is the captain for his Munster High School team that is the No. 1 team in the Indiana preseason boys swimming poll. His top times include: 100 Breast - 1:04.67*; 200 Breast - 2:24.89*.
"This is a very balanced class in terms of what these guys can do, which is good because we are graduating a good group of swimmers at the end of this year," Wadley said. "And if this current recruiting class can develop like our seniors have, then it has a chance to very special."
