COLUMBUS, Ohio - Behind three assists from Natalie Spooner and two-point games from Jenna Kilpatrick, Laura McIntosh and Hokey Langan, as well as 21 saves from goalie Chelsea Knapp, the Ohio State women's hockey team downed Minnesota State, 4-1, Saturday in the OSU Ice Rink. The win gives the Buckeyes the weekend sweep as they move to 4-3-3 on the year and 4-3-1-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Mavericks, who came into the series undefeated, now are 3-2-1 and 1-2-1-1 in conference play.
Langan put the Buckeyes on the board just 1:15 into the game with a power-play goal, her team-best seventh tally of the year. Shannon Reilly's shot from the point was saved but Spooner got her stick on it in the slot and it went across to Langan, who put it in before the goalie could get across the crease. The assist was Reilly's fourth, with Spooner picking up her fifth helper. Brittany Carlson extended the Buckeye lead to 2-0 with her first career goal at 17:50, scoring on the rebound of a Spooner shot (her sixth assist of the year and second of the game). Kilpatrick had the second assist on the goal, her first assist of the season. The Buckeyes controlled play and outshot the Mavericks, 18-9, in the stanza.
Ohio State made the score 3-0 on Kilpatrick's goal at 12:29 of the second period when she scored from just outside the crease, marking her second tally of the season. McIntosh (her team-best 10th) and Langan (her eighth) assisted on the goal. The Mavericks' Lisa Edman broke up the shutout as she was able to shovel a loose puck into the net after a scramble in front. The play was reviewed, but the goal, which came at 18:27, stood. Each team had just six shots on net in the stanza.
McIntosh scored the only goal of the third period. Spooner won a faceoff in the MSU zone to open up a power play and passed to McIntosh, who was able to beat the Maverick goalie clean for her third goal of the year, scored at 1:26. Shots were 7-6 in favor of MSU in the period. The Buckeye penalty kill stopped three chances in the stanza, with three overlapping penalties.
Ohio State outshot Minnesota State, 30-22, in the game. Chelsea Knapp made 21 saves to move to 3-3-3 on the year. MSU's Paige Thunder drops to 0-1-0.
The Buckeyes were 2-for-5 on the power play and held the Mavericks scoreless on all four chances.
Ohio State will be back in action next weekend when they travel to North Dakota for games Nov. 6-7.
