Nara Shin and Vicky Villanueva lead field with rounds of 72
COLUMBUS, Ohio - With four Buckeyes competing as individuals, the Ohio State women's golf team occupies four of the top 5 places in the player standings at the All-Ohio Invitational after the opening round Sunday.
The two-day, 36-hole event is being held on the par 71, 6,039-yard Scarlet Course and also includes Bowling Green, Dayton and Ohio. The schools are not competing as teams except for Dayton, so only player standings are available.
Sophomores Nara Shin and Vicky Villanueva lead the field with opening rounds of 72. Shin was even through her first nine holes and made back-to-back birdies after making the turn. The Avon, Conn., native had a tough last six holes with bogeys on three.
Villanueva, from Chacabuco, Argentina, was 2-over on the front nine, but cut her score with a birdie on No. 10 and held steady by making par on each of her last eight holes.
Susana Benavides is in third with a round of 75. After starting out 4-over on the opening 11 holes, the rookie from Cochabamba, Bolivia, made par on her last seven for a solid finish.
Closing out the Buckeye lineup was freshman Amy Meier in fifth place with a score of 80 after a tough round that included a quadruple bogey and two doubles.
The second round of the All-Ohio Invitational will begin at 11 a.m. Monday.
