SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Ohio State men's hockey team came from behind twice and defeated Lake Superior State, 4-3, Saturday in Taffy Abel Arena. The win gives the Buckeyes (2-4-0, 1-1-0 CCHA) a split in the series with the Lakers (4-2-0, 1-1-0 CCHA).
Ohio State trailed 2-0 in the first period until Matt Bartkowski's goal with seven seconds remaining cut the lead to one and Sergio Somma tallied just 37 seconds into the second to tie the game at 2. The Lakers responded with a goal at 3:56 to again go ahead but tallies from Peter Boyd at 8:35 and Patrick Schafer at 18:19 lifted the Buckeyes to the win. Cory Schneider and Taylor Stefishen each had two assists in the game.
In the first, the Lakers led 2-0 before a late Buckeye goal cut the lead to 2-1. Chad Nehring opened the scoring with a power-play goal, scoring on a backhand on the fly at 10:37. Will Acton made it 2-0 when he scored from a sharp angle at 14:30, assisted by Matt Cowie and Ben Power. The Lakers were assessed four penalties in the final 4:27 of the period, putting Ohio State on an extended power play. The Buckeyes finally converted with 7.7 seconds left in the period when Bartkowski's shot from the circle got through traffic for his second goal of the weekend. Schneider and Stefishen assisted on the goal. Ohio State outshot Lake State, 11-9, in the period. The Lakers scored on their one power-play chance. Ohio State was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
For the second-consecutive night Ohio State scored 37 seconds into the second period, as Somma got his second goal of the series when he put in the rebound of a Stefishen shot that was deflected by Zac Dalpe. The Lakers retook the lead (3-2) on a power-play goal from Steven Kaunisto, who redirected a Nehring shot at 3:56. Ohio State scored the final two goals of the period to tie the game and take the lead. Boyd scored on a wrap-around at 8:35, assisted by Chris Reed and Schneider. Schafer put Ohio State on top for the first time when he was able to wrist the puck in at 18:19 after John Albert got it to the slot. Senior Mathieu Picard had the second assist on the goal. Shots were 18-8 in favor of the Buckeyes in the period. The Lakers scored on the only power play in the stanza.
There was no scoring in the third period. The Lakers outshot the Buckeyes, 12-11. The Buckeyes had the only power-play chance of the stanza with less than four minutes left but did not score. LSSU pulled its goalie late and had a few chances but the Buckeye defense held strong for the win.
Ohio State outshot Lake Superior State, 41-28, in the game. Cal Heeter made 25 saves in all 60 minutes in the Buckeye net. Pat Inglis started and played 39:40, allowing all four goals and taking the loss while making 25 saves. Brian Mahoney-Wilson closed out the game and had 12 saves.
Ohio State converted 1-of-5 power-play chances. The Lakers were a perfect 2-for-2.
Postgame Notes
The Buckeyes will remain on the road next weekend with two games at Notre Dame. The teams will meet at 7:35 p.m. Friday and 5:05 p.m. Saturday in South Bend, Ind. WOSU.org will have the radio call.
Schneider had the first two assist game of his career and his first multiple-point game as a Buckeye.
