Ohio Stadium Moments ...

One of my fondest memories was the Michigan game in 1944. Due to the manpower shortage during WWII, I was one of the Boy Scouts recruited to serve as portal guides. Michigan scored at my end of the stadium with a few minutes to go in the fourth quarter. They then led 14-12. After the kickoff, OSU marched down the field. I think everyone in the stadium knew we would score. It was a wonderful aura that I have never again felt. I recall Bill Willis and (I think) Warren Ambling blasting holes in the Michigan line. We scored and won 18-14. I have been a Bill Willis fan ever since.

Mid-October, 1984, my senior year at OSU. Ohio State vs. Illinois on a beautiful, warm, fall Saturday. It was a late kick off, so by game's end, the lights are on. Unbelievably, the Buckeyes get off to a horrible start and between OSU turnovers and Illinois' great play, the Illini lead 24-0 early in the second quarter. Five touchdowns and 274 yards later, Keith Byars put on an unforgettable show and the Buckeyes responded with a thrilling 45-38 come-from-behind victory.

This game really sticks out in my mind as the most thrilling Buckeye win I have personally witnessed. I went on to graduate with both undergraduate and Medical Doctor degrees from OSU and have been fortunate enough to practice medicine in Marion, Ohio, where I can still get to all the home games. This game solidified me being a true Buckeye.

I have been a Buckeye Club Member for several years now. Each year, I come out and bring many of my friends and family from the East Coast to experience the joy of Buckeye Saturdays! There is nothing better in my opinion and all of my friends and family just love every minute of a football Saturday in Columbus. My grandfather was a season ticket holder for probably 40 years and each year I used to come from Connecticut to join my grandfather and attend at least one Buckeye game! After my grandfather died, I hadn’t been to a game in many years. Then in the 2002 season, I was reading the USA Today on the Friday before the Michigan Game and I had goose bumps all over and felt like my Grandfather was talking to me. I said to myself, “You have to go to this game!” Needless to say, the flight was close to $1,000 and the game ticket was over $500 and I had a wedding on Sunday, so I had to be back in CT that night. I left my house at 5 a.m. and arrived in Columbus at 10:30 a.m. and watched the most amazing game ever as Ohio State beat Michigan 14-9. I had the time of my life and as the last seconds went off the clock, I had to run out of the stadium to meet a cabdriver I had waiting because I had a 5 p.m. flight back to NY! Since that day, I have not missed a home Buckeye game ever again and don’t intend to!
