Ohio State Athletes of the Year
• Teresa Meyer, a senior on the pistol team, capped off her career as a Buckeye with three national titles in 2008, giving her seven for her career to be named Ohio State’s female athlete of the year. She won the women’s air pistol crown for the third-consecutive season and the women’s two-gun aggregate for the second time. Meyer won the 2008 women’s sport pistol championship and was the open standard pistol winner in 2007. She also had Top 6 finishes in open standard and open air pistol.

The Dearborn, Mich., native was a 14-time All-American, earning first-team accolades in air and sport pistol this year and a second-team nod in standard pistol. Meyer and the Buckeyes finished second in the Open Collegiate National Championship and the squad finished third in the women’s championship. A Spring 2008 graduate with a degree in business administration (human resources), Meyer was a finalist for the Big Ten Medal of Honor. She is enrolled in the Fisher College of Business MLHR program for Fall 2008.

• Andras Horanyi, a junior on the fencing team, won his second-consecutive individual national foil championship March 16 to cap the Buckeyes’ run to the NCAA national title and be named Ohio State’s male athlete of the year. Hosting the event for the first time, Ohio State outlasted Notre Dame for the team championship - the 57th overall team title for the athletics department in school history.

A native of Boulder, Colo., Horanyi was a stabilizing force on a youthful 2008 OSU foil team, compiling a 24-3 record against varsity opponents to push his career record to 89-7. He won both the Midwest Fencing Conference title and earned gold at the Midwest Regional Qualifier. Prior to the season, Horanyi earned individual gold at the Pan-American Games while competing for Team USA.

Athletics Good Stuff

Athletics
• Ohio State surpassed 1,000 points and remained in the Top 5 of the 2007-08 Division I U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup standings released June 11. Ohio State, fifth with 1,017.25 points, was third in the last rankings update May 29. The final scores will be announced June 26. Stanford has clinched the 2007-08 title with 1,419 points. The Directors’ Cup will remain in Cardinal possession for the 14th-consecutive year. Positions 2-5 are separated by less than 50 points heading into the final announcement. Michigan is second (1,061), followed by UCLA (1,048), California (1,044) and the Buckeyes.

• 115 current and former Buckeye student-athletes received their degree from The Ohio State University at spring commencement June 8 in Ohio Stadium. Among the honorees are former football player Mike Doss, former diver Kellen Harkness, pistol team member Teresa Meyer and track and field athletes Veronica and Lenny Jatsek.
• Director of Athletics and Assistant Vice President of The Ohio State University, Gene Smith was presented with the John L. Toner Award by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The honor is given to a director of athletics who has demonstrated superior administrative abilities and shown outstanding dedication to college athletics and particularly college football.
• The Big Ten Conference recognized seniors Veronica Jatsek (women’s track & field) and Kyle Coconis (men’s golf) as Ohio State’s recipients of the Big Ten’s Outstanding Sportsmanship Awards June 4. A total of 22 Big Ten student-athletes were chosen, two from each of the 11 member schools. These individuals were chosen from a group of 275 student-athletes honored throughout the academic year who displayed positive sportsmanship.

Baseball
Head Coach: Bob Todd
• Junior centerfielder/pitcher J.B. Shuck was chosen in the sixth round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft by the Houston Astros June 6. The left-hander from Galion, Ohio, and Galion High School was the Astros’ fifth choice in the draft and he was the 182nd player taken overall.
• Shuck, 5-11 and 185 pounds, is coming off a junior season in which he was chosen third-team All-Big Ten Conference as both an outfielder and a pitcher. He led the Ohio State pitching staff with 76 strikeouts and an opponents’ batting average of .216 while posting a 5-3 record and a 4.29 ERA. Offensively, Shuck was second on the team with a .356 average and he led with 47 runs scored and 22 stolen bases (26 attempts).
• Fifth-year senior pitcher Dan DeLucia was selected June 6 in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft by the Detroit Tigers. The left-hander from Columbus and Bishop Watterson High School came back from Tommy John surgery in 10 months to pitch for the Buckeyes in 2008 and compiled a 3-3 record and a 4.70 ERA in 51.2 innings pitched.
• DeLucia’s career numbers are most impressive: a 24-13 record and 3.91 ERA in 317.1 innings pitched. He started 52 times and limited opposing batters to a .263 batting average.
• Freshman pitcher Dean Wolosiansky, who was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American baseball team by Collegiate Baseball last week, has been chosen a PING! Baseball third-team freshman All-American. The right-hander from Uniontown, Ohio, and Green High School, is the 13th Buckeye to earn freshman All-America honors. Wolosiansky led Ohio State with seven wins and a 4.22 ERA in his first season. He was 7-4 overall and 5-2 with a 4.86 ERA in Big Ten Conference games. He also threw all three of the pitching staff’s complete games this season. He was named to the All-Big Ten second team.

Women’s Basketball
Head Coach: Jim Foster
• Signee Samantha Prahalis was named to USA Basketball’s 12-member U18 National Team June 12 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo. She was one of 35 prep standouts invited to the camp. The selections were made by the USA Basketball Women’s Collegiate Committee, chaired by Sue Donahoe, the NCAA’s vice president of Division I women’s basketball.

Diving
Head Coach: Vince Panzano
• Seven divers will compete June 18-22 in Indianapolis at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for a spot on Team USA at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Buckeyes competing along with 46 other divers from across the nation for the right to represent the United States at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games are:
- Bianca Alvarez (So; Miami, Fla.) – 3-meter springboard
- Kristin Asman (So.; Columbus) – 10-meter platform
- Chelsea Davis (Sr.; Columbus) – 3-meter springboard
- Kellen Harkness (2008 Ohio State graduate; Puyallup, Wash.) – 3-meter springboard; also will compete on synchro 3-meter July 2-6 in Knoxville, Tenn.
- Sean Moore (So.: Englewood, Colo.) – 10-meter platform; also will compete on synchro platform July 2-6 in Knoxville, Tenn.
- Burkley Showe (Jr.; Worthington, Ohio) – 3-meter springboard
- Wes Wieser (Sr.; Chesterfield, Mo.) – 10-meter platform; also will compete on synchro platform July 2-6 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Football
Head Coach: Jim Tressel
• Senior Todd Boeckman was named a 2008 candidate for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award June 13. The honor is presented annually to the nation’s top senior collegiate quarterback by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc.
• Senior kicker A.J. Trapasso was named a finalist for the Ray Guy Award June 12. The award honors the nation’s top collegiate punter.

Men’s Gymnastics
Head Coach: Miles Avery
• Junior captain Jake Bateman was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced June 10. A biology major, Bateman is a three-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and twice has been named a College Gymnastics Association First Team All-America Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Rowing
Head Coach: Andy Teitelbaum
• Gabriele Albertaviciute was named to the 2008 Division I Pocock First-Team All-America roster, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced June 10. Albertaviciute, a senior in 2008, becomes one of just three Buckeye rowers to earn first-team accolades twice during their career.

Men’s Track and Field
Head Coach: Robert Gary
• Sophomore Jeff See earned All-America honors in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA championships June 14 as he finished in fifth place in a time of 3:43.13. It is the second All-America laurel of 2008 for See. He earned his first honor during the indoor season in the mile.
• See was named to the All-Mideast region team after finishing third in the 1,500-meter run May 30-31. See came in with a time of 3:48.05.
• Senior David Ebersole added another honor to his solid senior season June 5. The Cleveland, Ohio, native was named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Team. The senior spouts a 3.85 grade-point-average in accounting. He moves onto the national ballot to try and earn Academic All-America honors.
• The district honor is the first of Ebersole’s career. However he has been one of the top academic student-athletes for the Buckeyes for several seasons. Last season, Ebersole carried a GPA over 3.5. He has already been accepted to attend graduate school in order to obtain his master’s degree in accounting. In 2007, Ebersole was an Academic All-America nominee.

Women’s Track and Field
Head Coach: Karen Dennis
• Senior Jenna Griffin posted the second-best time in school history in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.36 as she earned All-America honors with her seventh-place finish. It is the second All-America honor of Griffin’s career. Griffin joined Chandra Krempel, Ayrizanna Favours and Ashley Caldwell in the 4x400-meter relay and the quartet finished in a time 3:33.73 for sixth-place and All-America honors.
• The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and ESPN The Magazine named Griffin to its 2008 Academic All-District IV Team. She now moves on to the national ballot and will look to win back-to-back Academic All-America honors.
• Currently in graduate school, Griffin spouts an impressive 3.96 grade-point-average in marketing and strategic communications. She is a 2007 Academic All-American, a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete and graduated Summa Cum Laude June 2007.
• Additionally Griffin earned All-Mideast Region honors following her performance at the NCAA Regional Championships May 30-31. Griffin was second in the 400-meter dash in a school-record time of 52.00. That time also is tied for fifth-best in the country this season and qualifies as an Olympic-B standard.
• Joining Griffin on the all-regional team were Veronica Jatsek, Krempel, Caldwell and Favours. In the hammer throw, Jatsek earned a third-place finish with a toss of 198 feet, 11 inches. Griffin, Krempel, Caldwell and Favours set a school record in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:32.26 to finish second at the NCAA regional championships.

Men’s Volleyball
Head Coach: Pete Hanson
• Setter Daniel Mathews was named an Asics/Volleyball first-team All-American. The announcement was made in the June 2008 issue of Volleyball Magazine. A 2007 first-team selection, Mathews becomes Ohio State’s second two-time Volleyball first-team All-American. He was a second team selection in 2006. The 6-5 Mathews directed the Buckeye squad to a 20-8 overall record, winning the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association regular season championship with an 11-1 mark. He was named MIVA Player of the Year for the second-consecutive year and earned all-conference honors for the fourth time. Mathews was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 MIVA tournament, collecting the honor for the second time in his career (2005).
• Brett Versen was elected as a special mention All-American. He was a first-team MIVA all-conference selection this season and was named to the MIVA All-Tournament Team. Versen averaged 3.69 kills, .28 aces, 1.43 digs, .86 blocks and 4.45 points per game while hitting .269 for the Buckeyes.
