Senior tri-captain talks about the Buckeyes in the Top 20, her trip to nationals, being a captain and turning 22
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Kaylan Clevinger might be on to something.
After advancing to the national championships last season as an individual event specialist on bars, the tri-captain’s goal this season is be there again, but this time with her entire team. And with the Buckeyes notching a school-record 193.850 in their season-opener last Friday, the team took the first step in that direction.
On bars, Clevinger is picking up right where she left off last year when she notched a 9.90 at the regional championships to tie for first and punch her ticket to the national championships. Last Friday in Ohio State’s season-opener at Maryland, Clevinger scored a team-best 9.80 – not bad for the first time out.
The Buckeyes are back on the road this week with a Big Ten dual meet at Illinois Saturday night. But first, Clevinger has to get older – literally. Wednesday, she will turn 22, and another year of experience will do nothing but help Ohio State in their quest to continue to rise in the national rankings, which has the Buckeyes at No. 17 this week.
The native of Shawnee Mission, Kan., sat down Tuesday before practice to discuss her expectations for herself and the team this season, Ohio State’s rise into the Top 20, how competing at nationals last year is helping her this year, how she has grown into being a leader in the gym for the Buckeyes, and her birthday.
