From July through September, Ohio State student-athletes and cheerleaders have contributed more than 1,000 hours of community service. Buckeye student-athletes are committed to giving back to the community that supports them.
Ohio State Student-Athlete Community Outreach Highlights (July-Sept., 2008)
- Through September, the football team has contributed more than 350 hours of community service time by visiting the James Cancer Center, Children’s Hospital, Genoa Baptist Church and the New Albany Classic and participating in Make -A-Wish Foundation and Uplifting Athletes.
- Members of the wrestling team make visits once a month to Children’s Hospital to play and interact with children and families. The Buckeyes also have been active in 2nd & 7 each Thursday throughout October.
- In August, women’s volleyball visited Arlington Nursing Home and helped at the Community Kitchen Inc.
- Rowing participated in the “Light the Night Walk” for Leukemia and Lymphoma Oct. 18 and helped raise $2,500. The team also will be participating in a Habitat for Humanity event Oct. 26.
- Men’s basketball and men’s hockey teams participated in the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) Walk Oct. 5 at Ohio Stadium.
- Women’s soccer took part in Hope Street Kids - leading the fight against Childhood Cancer in August and more recently held its Breast Cancer Awareness game Oct. 5 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
- Women’s hockey (Sept. 20 and 27) and women's track and field (Sept. 20) served as Sportsmanship Council/Best Fans in the Land Campaign ambassadors on football game days. The teams signed autographs in Fan Fest and passed out the game day buttons/Best Fans in the Land buttons to visiting fans.
The Buckeyes also participated in a hockey tournament called Rooptober and assisted with the skills competition to raise money for Gilda Radner Familial Ovarian Cancer Sept. 20 at the Chiller Ice Rink downtown.
Last night, the team held its Breast Cancer Awareness game at the OSU Ice Rink.
- Softball and women's track and field participated in the 5K Break the Silence Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer Sept. 21 and had its charity fall tournament Oct. 5 on campus.
- Women’s lacrosse participated in the ALS Walk Sept. 28.
- Members of men’s and women’s gymnastics teams took part in and signed autographs in the New Albany Classic Sept. 28 to benefit the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence.
- The cheerleading team was involved in more than 600 hours of community service during September. Cheerleading took part in events from elementary school visits to alumni events to visiting heath care and adult daycare centers. The cheerleaders also joined Buckeye student athletes at the New Albany Classic.
