MVB: Buckeyes Complete Two-Match Sweep of Waterloo with 30-23, 30-25, 30-22 Victory Saturday

Ben Spurlock had a team-high 13 points in the 3-0 victory over Waterloo Saturday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s volleyball team completed a two-match sweep of Waterloo (Canada) with a 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-22) exhibition victory Saturday night in St. John Arena. Buckeye Ben Spurlock had a team-high 13 points for Ohio State with 11 kills, an ace serve and an assist block. OSU’s Ted Schoenfeldt added 11.5 points for the Buckeyes with 11 kills and an assist block. Waterloo’s Brett Campbell posted a match-high 13.5 points for the Warriors with 12 kills, an ace serve and an assist block. Cameron Dunning added 9.5 points with nine kills and an assist block for the Warriors.

Ohio State hit .308 for the match to .176 for Waterloo. The Buckeyes had a 52-34 advantage in kills and a 7-4 margin in ace serves. OSU’s Steven Kehoe posted a match-high three ace serves for the Buckeyes. OSU gave up 12 service errors to 10 for the Warriors. Kehoe posted a match-high 38 assists in the contest while Andrew Thorpe had 29 for Waterloo. Defensively Ohio State had a 35-23 advantage in digs with OSU’s Kehoe recording a match-high eight and  Brian Kues six. At the net, the Warriors had a 7-4 advantage in team blocks. Warriors Thorpe (4 assists) and Ian Pappel (1 solo, 3 assists) shared match-high honors with four total blocks each.

Ohio State, ranked tied for 10th in the preseason Bison/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division I-II Men’s Coaches Top 15 Poll, will open the regular season when they travel to Honolulu, Hawai’i to play in the 15th Outrigger Hotels Invitational. The Buckeyes will face 13th-ranked Hawai’i at 12 p.m. ET, Thursday, Jan. 8. Ohio State then faces top-ranked Penn State at 9 p.m. ET, Friday, Jan. 9 and completes play against seventh-ranked Southern California at 9 p.m. ET, Saturday, Jan. 10.
