COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men and women's fencing teams participated in the 38th annual Garrett Open hosted by Penn State University this weekend, placing sixteen fencers in the Top 20 in their respective events. The Buckeyes were in their second tournament of the season, coming off of last weekend's clean sweep in the OSU Duals competition.

The female fencers competed Saturday, and finished with a strong showing in the each category. The foil team showed their prowess, with junior Oksana Dmytruk and senior Holly McKibben placing third and fourth, respectively. Sophomore Allison Henvick ended the day at 14th, and senior Lindsay Knauer rounded out the lineup for the Buckeyes, finishing 23rd.

Senior Julia Tikhonova was the highest placing Buckeye in women's epee, finishing eighth. Freshman Alison Miller had an outstanding performance, taking third in the sabre competition. Junior Falencia Miller, sophomore Margarita Tschmoakova and sophomore Emily Cheng finished sixth, 13th and 26th, respectively, in the sabre field.

Men's competition kicked off Sunday morning. The foil competitors headlined the men's performances, with four past and present Buckeye fencers finishing in the Top 20. Andras Horanyi, who finished his eligibility with the Buckeyes last season, won the category after defeating Robert Malcolm of Princeton. Junior Ben Parkins had a solid outing, finishing 13th. Junior Colin Sutter placed 18th and classmate Joe Doherty finished directly under him at 19th.

In men's epee, sophomore Igor Tolkachev took third, with a group of Buckeyes finishing in the top 15.  Trevor Pederson, Eric Gurnowski and Daniel Tafoya finished 11th, 13th and 15th, respectively. Michael Douville was the top finisher for the Scarlet and Gray in men's sabre, taking 11th.
