COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's swimming and diving team picked up a win and three more NCAA "B" qualifying standards and remains in fifth place at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind. Michigan continues to lead in the three-day meet with 523.5 points with Louisville second with 507.5. The Buckeyes have 311.

Junior Samantha Cheverton, who had a NCAA "B" qualifying time in the 500 freestyle Friday, took first place in the 200 freestyle in an NCAA "B" time of 1:47.62.

"A terrific time for Sam this early in the season," second-year swimming coach Bill Dorenkott said.

The Buckeye relays proved to be strong once again. The 200 medley relay team of Kelsey Moran, Catherine Eitel, Shannon Draves and Megan Detro took third in a school-record and an NCAA qualifying standard time of 1:42.38.

And the 800 free relay team of Detro, Anita Beck, Draves and Cheverton placed second in an NCAA "B" time of 7:18.15.

"The relays were the highlight of the evening," Dorenkott said. "The 800 free relay was a terrific way to finish up the meet."

The Buckeyes, who did not rest prior to this meet and were coming off a busy week of five practices plus dry-land training, continue to impress Dorenkott with their conditioning.

"The 800 free relay was, for many of the girls, their sixth swim of the day," Dorenkott said. "We are far from fresh. And for us not having raced that much yet this season, this speaks positively to our conditioning right now.  We are apples to oranges in our training cycles, ahead of where we've been and certainly ahead of last year's pace. This is a good starting point."

Draves joined Cheverton in a championship final. The freshman took sixth in the 100 butterfly in 54.98.

Ohio State received top eight points from divers Bianca Alvarez and Chelsea Davis as well. They were sixth and seventh, respectively, on the 1-meter springboard.

The meet concludes Sunday with prelims in the morning and finals beginning at 4 p.m.
