Buckeye Drop Four-Set Decision at Purdue

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State (22-9 overall, 10-8 Big Ten) women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (28-26, 25-23, 16-25, 27-25 decision at Purdue (13-16, 5-13) Saturday night in Holloway Gymnasium. OSU's Katie Dull posted a match-high 22 points with 19 kills, one ace serve, one solo block and two assist blocks. Purdue's Carrie Gurnell recorded a team-high 21.5 points with a match-high 20 kills and three assist blocks.

Purdue opened set one with a Gurnell-Anna Drewry block and two ace serves from Emily Ehlers for a 3-0 lead. At 4-1 Purdue, an Anna Szerszen kill, an Emily Danks-Kristen Dozier block and a Purdue error tied the set at four. Tied at 10, kills from Dull and Kelli Barhorst gave Ohio State a 12-10 lead. With Ohio State leading, 23-22, a Dozier kill gave OSU set point at 24-22. A Gurnell kill and an Ariel Turner-Tiffany Fisher block tied the set at 24. OSU took a 25-24 lead on a kill from Dozier for a second set point. Fisher, with a kill, tied the set at 25. A Drewry-Turner block gave Purdue a 26-25 lead and set point. A Dull kill stopped the set point, tying the match at 26. A Turner kill made it 27-26 Purdue for their second set point. The Boilermakers, with a Carly Cramer-Anna Drewry block won the set, 28-26, to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Purdue hit .189 for the set to .128 for the Buckeyes.

After a 1-1 tie, kills from Sam Ainsworth and Jaclyn Hart gave Purdue a 3-1 lead. The Boilermakers would hold the lead with Ohio State closing to one several times. Trailing, 23-20, a Purdue error and a kill from Barhorst made it a one point lead at 23-22. An Ainsworth kill made it 24-22 and set point for the Boilermakers. Dull, with a kill, stopped the set point at 24-23. Purdue won the set, 25-23 with a Gurnell kill to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Purdue hit .469 for the set to .243 for the Buckeyes.

With set three tied at six, Ohio State scored five consecutive points to open an 11-6 lead. The run began with two kills from Dull, a Betsy Hone kill, a Chelsea Noble ace serve and a Purdue error. An OSU error made it 11-7. The Buckeyes made the lead six at 13-7 with a Dull kill and a Purdue error. Ohio State held the lead reaching set point at 24-15 with a Hone ace serve. A kill from Turner stopped the set point at 24-16. The Buckeyes, with a kill from Dull, won the set, 25-16, to cut the Purdue lead to 2-1. Ohio State hit .591 for the set to .231 for Purdue.

Purdue, with two OSU errors and a Fisher-Ainsworth block, opened set four with a 3-0 lead. Trailing, 20-18, a kill from Danks and a Purdue error tied the set at 20. OSU took a 21-20 lead on a Szerszen kill. Turner tied the set at 21 with a kill. Tied at 23, a Purdue error gave Ohio State set point at 24-23. The Boilermakers tied the set at 24 with a Gurnell kill. A Buckeye error gave Purdue a 25-24 lead and match point. The Buckeyes tied the set at 25 with a kill from Dull. A Drewry block gave Purdue a 26-25 lead and match point. Purdue closed out the set with an Ainsworth-Fisher block at 27-25, giving the Boilermakers a 3-1 win in the match. Purdue hit .310 for the set to .237 for Ohio State.

Purdue hit .299 for the match to .257 for Ohio State. The Boilermakers had a 63-60 advantage in kills while Ohio State had a 6-3 margin in ace serves. OSU's Danks collected a match-high three ace serves. The Boilermakers gave up 10 service errors to seven for OSU. At setter, Hart collected a match-high 48 assists for Purdue. OSU's Hone recorded a team-high 27 assists for the Buckeyes with Hughes adding 17. Defensively, each squad recorded 49 digs in the contest. OSU's Noble and Purdue's Blair Bashen shared match-high honors with 18 digs each. At the net, the Boilermakers had a 13-9 margin in team blocks. Purdue's Drewry posted a match-high eight blocks with three solos and five assists.

Ohio State will close out the regular season with home matches against Michigan (24-7, 12-6) and Michigan State (17-13, 5-13) in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes will host the Michigan Wolverines Friday and the Michigan State Spartans Saturday in 7 p.m. matches.
