Hokey Langan enters Ohio State's top 10 for freshman scoring while extending point streak to 10 games

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's hockey team fell to St. Lawrence by a score of 3-2 Saturday in a lackluster game at the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes were outshot 41-21 and did not draw a power play opportunity as the team split with the Saints in a nonconference series.

Ohio State moves to 6-7-3 overall (5-6-1-0 WCHA) and St. Lawrence is 6-5-4 (3-3-1 ECAC).

Hokey Langan, a freshman from Chatham, Ontario, had an assist in the game to break into the top 10 in freshman scoring in the Ohio State record books. Just 16 games into her rookie campaign, she has 24 points (10g, 14a) to lead the Buckeyes in goals, assists and points.

Langan also extended her point streak to 10 games and is only the second Buckeye to ever post a double-digit point streak. Ohio State's all-time leading scorer, Jana Harrigan (2003-06), had streaks of 17 games and 14 games during her career.

The scoring opened on a goal by Vanessa Emond to give the Saints a 1-0 lead 5:21 into the contest. She scored a second after their power play expired, shooting the puck over the right shoulder of Buckeye goalie Chelsea Knapp. Emond was assisted by Kelly Sabatine, her first of three points in the game, and Britni Smith.

Ohio State tied it at 1-all at 9:47 when sophomore Laura McIntosh carried the puck around the net and fed it to senior defenseman Rachel Davis, who came in and scored from the right corner. The goal was Davis' third, while McIntosh and senior Raelyn LaRocque tallied their 13th assists.

With the first period winding down, St. Lawrence tacked on another goal for a 2-1 lead at the first intermission. Scoring on a wrist shot from low in the slot was Michelle Ng off passes by Sabatine and Smith.

Sabatine added an unassisted goal just 2:34 into the second period to build a two-goal SLU lead when she stole the puck at the blue line and scored unassisted off the turnover.

The Buckeyes were able to cut it to 3-2 at 18:03 of the stanza when Langan fired a shot in at sophomore Melissa Feste who knocked it in from the right side of the net. It was Feste's third goal of the weekend and seventh overall, while Langan collected her team-leading 14th assist.

The teams skated through a scoreless third period. Ohio State pulled the goalie for an extra skater the last 1:10, but with no result.

Knapp made a season-high 38 saves, including seven against the SLU power play, but dropped to 4-7-3. Brittony Chartier (5-3-3) finished with 19 saves for the Saints.

The Buckeyes will be off until Dec. 11-12 when they conclude the first half of their season with a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series at St. Cloud State. Ohio State returns to home ice Jan. 2-3 when the team faces Robert Morris in a nonconference series at the OSU Ice Rink.

Game Notes:

  • It was the first time in the 11-year history of Ohio State women's hockey the Buckeyes did not have a power-play opportunity in a game. They were limited to one the entire series (0-of-1).
  • OSU's penalty kill was 5-of-6 Saturday and 6-of-8 overall for the series.
  • The Buckeyes are 1-1-2 vs. non-WCHA opponents this season.
  • It was the fourth one-goal loss for Ohio State this year.
  • Melissa Feste concluded the series with four points on three goals and an assist.
  • Ohio State now has six players with double-digit points - Hokey Langan (24), Laura McIntosh (19), Natalie Spooner (18), Raelyn LaRocque (16), Melissa Feste (13) and Rachel Davis (11).
  • It was the third game of the year Chelsea Knapp has made 30 or more saves.
