Playing 'The Game': OSU, Michigan prep for battle

OSU Lantern - Whether undefeated or winless, it's still Ohio State-Michigan. In 2006, OSU and Michigan clashed in Columbus undefeated as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the nation. On Saturday, the Buckeyes will meet Michigan at The Big House, with a Big Ten title and trip to the Rose Bowl already wrapped up.

Owens' character could vault him to D.C.

Columbus Dispatch - State legislators heard reasons why Olympian Jesse Owens, one of several candidates, should represent Ohio in the National Statuary Hall.

His legs carried him to world prominence. But it was his heart, dedication and love of a country that didn't always return the love to men of his color that gave Jesse Owens the combination of athleticism and character to make him a top-notch choice to represent Ohio in Washington, D.C.  That was the message delivered yesterday to the National Statuary Collection Study Committee, a legislative board that will recommend in May which Ohioan should represent the state in National Statuary Hall. Three state legislators visited Ohio State University to hear a panel, including two of Owens' daughters, tell why the Olympian is worthy of the honor.

They will play Nov. 27 at Ohio Stadium next season, Nov. 26 in 2011 at Michigan Stadium and Nov. 24 at Ohio State in 2012. "I'm kind of an old-timer ... I've always thought the Big Ten had a great advantage in the fact their kids go home for an extended Thanksgiving vacation," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said Tuesday during a teleconference. "To have a chance to be with your family over Thanksgiving, I've always felt was a real positive thing for our kids.

Victory over Wolverines in '54 was a classic

The Columbus Dispatch Saturday afternoon in Michigan Stadium, Ohio State will wear "throwback" uniforms that honor the school's 1954 national championship team. Ohio State's 21-7 triumph that season in The Game ranks as one of the Buckeyes' all-time top victories. The Big Ten title and berth in the Rose Bowl were on the line when top-ranked Ohio State entertained 12th-ranked Michigan on Nov. 20. Woody Hayes was in his fourth season as head coach of the Buckeyes. Ohio State entered the game 6-0 in league play (8-0 overall), and Michigan was 5-1 (6-2). Coach Bennie Oosterbaan's Wolverines had lost to Indiana (13-9) in conference action and could create a tie for the Big Ten crown with a victory. The game was nationally televised, with former Michigan great Tom Harmon and veteran sportscaster Bill Stern handling the announcing. Press credentials were issued to more than 500 media representatives -- at the time the largest ever to cover a Big Ten game.

Buckeyes still tinkering with 'Wildcat'

USA Today COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - What's brewing today with the 2009 Ohio State Buckeyes. BUCKEYES BUZZ: The plays weren't all that effective, but Ohio State showed some innovation in its offense in the dramatic 27-24 overtime victory over Iowa by running the ball several times on direct snaps to running back Dan "Boom" Herron. The "wildcat" formation is all the rage in the NFL thanks to the Miami Dolphins, who have embraced the no-quarterback, direct snap set.

Coach Jim Tressel said Monday that his staff proposed the wildcat several weeks ago.

Some Ohio State fans looking forward to throwback uniforms

Coshocton Tribune Aaron Conrad knows what he looks like in silver. The big question heading into Saturday is how the Lancaster attorney looks in white Conrad, an ardent Ohio State football fan, paints his shaved head to resemble a Buckeye helmet for every game. So what does Conrad think of Ohio State rolling out throwback uniforms for Saturday's game at Michigan?

Buckeyes' backfield near full strength, wildcat could be unleashed against Wolverines

Cleveland Plain Dealer Quarterback Terrelle Pryor's injured left ankle forced Ohio State to add a wrinkle to the running attack the previous two weeks with their version of the wildcat, sending Pryor in motion and directly snapping the ball to a running back. With Pryor and running backs Dan Herron, Brandon Saine and Jordan Hall expected to be near full-strength against Michigan on Saturday, maybe things will get a little more wild against the Wolverines. "We look at it as if we've got four different runners, and at the moment we worked it, the running backs were healthier than Terrelle," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said. "The good news is I'd like to think we'll go into Saturday and all four will be healthy."

Earle Bruce: Pryor's test is here Columbus Dispatch

As Bruce knows, Buckeyes judged by how they fare vs. Wolverines

Mansfield News Journal If Earle Bruce has high expectations for Ohio State sophomore Terrelle Pryor, it's because the old ball coach has been down this road himself with a ballyhooed quarterback. In 1979, Bruce's first season as OSU head coach, sophomore Art Schlichter guided the Buckeyes to an 18-15 win at Michigan and within a victory of a national championship after pitching 21 interceptions his freshman season.

OSU's Barclay is no longer kicking in obscurity

Canton Repository On his way off the field, the only player without a name on his jersey was the hero. Fitting, given that some of his Buckeye teammates estimate 50 players in the locker room didn't know who Devin Barclay even was. An overtime win against Iowa and a trip to the Rose Bowl both rested on the inexperienced and unknown right leg of Barclay, a walk-on kicker. Head Coach Jim Tressel said he had confidence that Barclay could make the 39-yard field goal, but Tressel was making plans for a second overtime, not a celebration.

OSU Lantern - At the beginning of the season, if one had said Ohio State's hopes would rest on the shoulders of Devin Barclay, most would have been skeptical or uncomfortable.
