COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State (19-7 overall, 7-6 Big Ten) women's volleyball team, behind a match-high 22.5 points from Katie Dull and 12.5 from Kristen Dozier, won, 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-17) at Iowa Friday night. Dull recorded a match-high 18 kills (.308), three ace serves, one solo block and one assist blocks for her 22.5 points. Dozier collected 11 kills and three assist blocks. Iowa's Aimee Huffman had a team-high 13.0 points with 12 kills and two assist blocks. Megan Schipper added 12.0 points with seven kills, one ace serve, two solo blocks and four assist blocks.
Set one opened with a kill by Dozier and a Sarah Mignin ace serve for a 2-0 Buckeye lead. At 5-3, a Huffman kill and an OSU error tied the set at five. Tied at eight, two Ohio State errors gave Iowa a 10-8 lead. The Buckeyes would cut the lead to one, five times, the last at 16-15. A Mara Hilgenberg kill and a Becky Walters-Tiffany Nilges block gave Iowa an 18-15 lead. At 23-20, a Nilges kill made it set point for the Hawkeyes at 24-20. Iowa won the set, 25-20, with a Walters-Hilgenberg block to have a 1-0 lead in the match. The Hawkeyes hit .310 for the set to .108 for Ohio State.
Set two opened with a Dull kill. The teams shared 10 ties and four lead changes before a Schipper kill tied the set at 15 for the last time. Two Buckeye kills from Anna Szerszen and two Hawkeye errors opened a 19-15 Ohio State lead. A Nilges kill made it 19-16. Another Szerszen kill and an Iowa error gave OSU a 21-16 lead as the Hawkeyes called time out. Nilges, with a kill, cut the lead to four at 21-17. A Dull kill and an Iowa error made the Buckeyes lead 23-17. A kill from Walters and a Hawkeye error made it set point at 24-18. A Buckeye error stopped the set point at 24-19. Ohio State won the set, 25-19, with a Betsy Hone kill to tie the match at one set each. Ohio State hit .333 for the set to .206 for Iowa.
After five early ties in set three, a Szerszen kill and a Dozier-Hone block gave Ohio State a 7-5 lead. A kill by Hilgenberg cut the lead to one at 7-6. Kills from Dozier and Susan Halverson with an Iowa error opened a 10-6 Ohio State lead. At 13-9, a kill from Emily Danks and a Dull ace serve made the lead five at 15-10. Trailing, 17-13, a kill from Schipper and an OSU error cut the margin to two at 17-15 as Ohio State called time out. A Dozier-Hone block made it 18-15. Two OSU errors cut the Buckeye lead to one at 18-17. A Hone kill and a Kelli Barhorst-Dull block gave the Buckeyes a 20-17 lead. Kills from Schipper and Aimee Huffman and a Buckeye error made it 21-19 as OSU called time out. A kill from Dull and an OSU error moved the score to 22-20. Kills from Danks and Szerszen made it set point at 24-20. An Iowa error ended the set to give the Buckeyes a 25-20 win and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .184 for the set to .000 for Iowa.
The Buckeyes opened set four with kills from Dozier and Barhorst and with an Iowa error held a 3-0 lead. A Huffman kill and a Schipper solo block made it 3-2. Kills from Hone and Huffman made it 4-3. A Dull kill and a Barhorst solo block gave Ohio State a 6-3 lead. A solo block from Schipper and a kill from Dull made it 7-4. Kills from Schipper and Szerszen made it 8-5. Two Hawkeye errors and a kill from Dull gave OSU a six point lead at 11-5. At 13-7, an Iowa error took the lead to seven at 14-7. The Hawkeyes, with a kill from Walters, an OSU error and a block from Walters and Huffman cut the lead to four at 14-10. The Buckeyes made the lead six at 16-10 with a Barhorst-Hone block and a kill from Dull. A Schipper kill followed by a kill and ace serve from Dull made it 18-11. At 21-14, a Katie Kennedy kill and two from Emma Krieger Kittle made it 21-17 as Ohio State called time out. Buckeye kills from Dozier and Dull made it 23-17. Ohio State reached match point at 24-17 off an Iowa error. The set ended, 25-17, with a Sarah Mignin ace serve to give OSU a 3-1 victory in the match. For the set, Ohio State hit .242 to .079 for the Hawkeyes.
Ohio State hit .210 for the match to .140 for Iowa. The Buckeyes had a 56-43 margin in kills and a seven-to-two advantage in ace serves. OSU's Dull recorded a match-high three aces with Mignin adding two. The Hawkeyes gave up six service errors to five for Ohio State. Defensively, OSU enjoyed a 59-47 margin in digs. OSU's Chelsea Noble posted a match-high 16 digs in the contest. At the net, Iowa had an 11 to eight margin in team blocks. Schipper had a match-high six total blocks with two solos and four assist blocks. At setter, Iowa's Hilgenberg recorded a match-high 36 assists. OSU's Hone posted 35 assists off the bench with Ashley Hughes having 13.
Katie Dull, with her fourth kill of the match, became the 17th Buckeye to reach 1,000 career kills. Her 18 kills against the Hawkeyes gives her 1,014 career kills.
Ohio State completes with weekend road trip at 7 p.m. CT Saturday at Wisconsin (11-11, 6-7).
